18.07.2014 – Nuwar Faqie – BasNews, Baghdad – On Friday, Secretary of the Iranian Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani arrived in Baghdad and discussed security issues and possible candidates for the upcoming presidency elections with Iraqi PM Nouri al-Maliki.
A source present at the meeting told BasNews that Shamkhani presented an important letter to Maliki from the government of Iran. “Iranian officials are pleased that Najmadin Karim has been named the candidate for the Iraqi presidency post. Iran believes that Karim is a suitable person for this post,” said the source about the content of Iran’s letter to Maliki. Iranian forces have been sent to Iraq to help the Iraqi Army in standing against ISIS rebels. They have suffered 23 casualties since coming to the army’s aid last month.
