MESOP : NEXT COUP AHEAD – Erdogan is seeking to exclude HDP from parliament: analysts
Analysts believe Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is seeking to repeat June 7 parliament election in the state in hope of preventing pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) from entering into the parliament and he would change the state’s parliamentary system into presidency after his Justice and Development (AKP) could win majority in parliament.
Soli Ozel, an International Affairs’ expert in Qadirhas University told the VOA that the resumption of attacks against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) bases results from party policies and the attacks have targeted the HDP although bullets are shot against the PKK. In addition, Senan Olcen, researcher in Carnegi Foundation, stated the ruling AKP hopes recent attacks against the PKK and clashes in the southeast would prevent the HDP from achieving 10 percents of votes and enter into the parliament and not only win majority of votes but also pass a new constitution that would empower the president. Hurriyet columnist, Semih Idiz, however, believes that AKP could win the support of some Kurds and Erdogan advisors think Kurdish votes will choose the AKP over the HDP to bring an end to the current situation but “I think they are quite wrong and the result will backfire.”The journalist added the HDP would finally pass the 10 percent threshold and would enter the parliament and the AKP would achieve nothing. Analysts believe the call by the HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtas from the PKK to lay down its arms unilaterally will help the HDP to introduce itself as a part of the solution not the problem. www.mesop.de
