MESOP NEWS TODAY SOUTH KURDISTAN IRAQ : KRG Rejects Tehran’s Accusations of Arming Iranian Kurdish Opposition Forces – Such rumors are baseless and untrue, the KRG says
Basnews English – 08/11/2016 – ERBIL — Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has responded to the accusations made by a senior Iranian official against Erbil and described them as “baseless remarks”.
On Tuesday, November 8th, KRG released a statement in which it says the accusations by top military advisor to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran are “baseless and unacceptable”, and they may affect the historic and friendly relations between Kurdistan Region and Iran.Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi, and advisor to Ali Khamenei, claimed on Monday that Saudi Arabia is arming Iranian Kurdish opposition forces via Erbil. He also blamed President Masoud Barzani and Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani for diverging Erbil from Baghdad.
“He has no evidence to prove his words. We deny he has any evidence to prove that the Kurdistan Region has made any threat to Iran in any way,” reads KRG’s statement issued in response to Safavi. “We hope Rahim Safavi’s remarks do not represent Iran’s official policies.”
The statement points out that KRG’s policy has always been establishing a strong relation with neighboring countries, including Iran, and avoiding intervention into other states affairs. “We are committed to be a factor for stability and security in the region.”The Kurdish government reminded there was a joint security commission created between Erbil and Tehran to discuss any topics related to security. “It is odd to us that nothing regarding this issue has been discussed in the commission,” the KRG statement added.
