MESOP NEWS “THE KURDISTAN FLAG DEBATE” : THERE’S ONLY ONE MUTUAL FLAG FOR KURDS BY APO OECALAN

Iraqi Kurdistan’s flag is a local flag not the flag of all Kurds: PKK official

3 April 2017 – MESOP NEWS – A leading member of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), Mustafa Karasu, wrote in an article under the title of “respecting the flag of confederalism” in Yeni Ozgur Political that some try to introduce Iraqi Kurdistan Region’s flag as the flag of all Kurds. Efforts have been conducted and some propaganda has been made within the efforts. But any effort to introduce the flag of a local administration as the flag of all nations is a mere exaggeration. Certainly it is a flag, but stating that this flag belongs to all Kurds is a mere mistake.

Both for Kurds and for the history, the colors of red, green and yellow have turned into a symbol. There are even stories that Kawa (a Kurdish legendary figure) used the three-color flag. The PKK Leader Abdullah Ocalan has stated that the three colors are the flag of the democratic confederalism. Developing the three-color flag was because of PKK efforts so as the colors have turned into a culture in Newruz. No one can deny the role of the PKK in this regard, the article further read.

Karasu went on to add in the article that nations can use the flags of small governments and political parties but the PKK cannot accept the flag of a small government to be introduced as the flag of all Kurds.
