MESOP NEW : Islamic State’s attacks cause Kurdish casualties in Kobane
ARA News – 25 Nov 2014 – Suruc, Turkey – Sporadic clashes broke out Monday between the Kurdish fighters of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) (backed by the Peshmerga forces) and militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) in a number of neighborhoods in the embattled city of Kobane (Ain al-Arab) in Aleppo province, in northern Syria.
These clashes coincided with the international coalition’s airstrikes against the IS headquarters in the countryside of Kobane. Accordingly, the IS militants responded with shelling the western part of the city, injuring a number of YPG fighters, including one of the Peshmergas.Speaking to ARA News in Kobane, Feras Hamza, an aid worker in the field hospital of the city, reported that the clashes were concentrated in the southern and eastern neighborhoods of the city, in the vicinity of the Sinaa area.
“The YPG fighters were able to destroy an IS-manned vehicle, killing and wounding several militants in the city as well as in the villages of Minaz, Mazri, and Abroosh,” he said. Hamza also pointed to the continuous mortar shelling by IS militants on the central and western parts of the city.“IS shelling caused substantial damage to many buildings in the central and western parts of the city as well as injuring a number of YPG fighters, including one of the Peshmergas.”On the other hand, the YPG’s Media Center reported the killing of six IS militants and the wounding of three others in Kobane, while one fighter from the YPG lost his life during clashes against the extremist group. Noteworthy, the coalition’s warplanes bombed IS targets on Monday in the southern areas of the city, including districts of Sinaa and Kanya Araban. There were no reports of casualties.
