Dual nationality could cost new Iraqi president his post
26.07.2014 – Nuwar Faqie – BasNews, Erbil – A number of Iraqi political blocs are campaigning for the removal of newly elected Iraqi President Fuad Masum. The primarily Shia blocs are calling on Article 18 of the Iraqi constitution, which claims that Iraqis with dual nationalities are banned from taking on senior government posts.
Masum who was voted in as Iraq’s new president by the Iraqi Parliament on Wednesday, holds British and Iraqi passports. Masum, a senior member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) became the second Kurd to be elected president of Iraq following PUK leader Jalal Talabani’s nine-year rule.Kurdish law expert Shamal Ahmed believes that electing Masum as president is against the Iraqi constitution. “According to the Iraqi constitution and Article 18, someone who holds two passports cannot be elected into any of Iraq’s three main posts – Iraqi Prime Minister, Parliament speaker and President – Fuad Masum can’t keep his post and the Kurds should remove him and replace him with another politician,” said Kurdish law expert, Shamal Ahmed.
