MESOP MIDEAST WATCH: Syrian Monitor Says 28 Kurdish Forces, 45 IS Militants, Five Children Killed in Hasakah Clashes

BASNEWS 23-1-2022 ERBIL — The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Saturday that 28 Kurdish internal security forces, 45 Islamic State (IS) militants, and five civilians were killed as a result of clashes in Hasakah over the past two days.

Clashes have been ongoing between the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and IS jihadists near al-Sinaa prison in Hasakeh where dozens of insurgents escaped the jail after an attack on the facility.

The prison, where nearly 4,000 IS detainees are being held, came under attack last Thursday with three explosions, including car bomb and suicide attacks.

A statement by the SDF said that “22 terrorist attackers were killed in Ghweran prison,” adding: “A vehicle loaded with weapons, ammunition, and explosive belts was seized by our forces.”

A great number of residents of Ghweran neighborhood were seen escaping their homes where heavy clashes between the Kurdish forces and IS militants were still ongoing.

The SDF on Friday said that it had re-arrested 89 IS detainees who had attempted to escape Ghweran Prison in Hasakah, northeast of Syria.

“Our forces thwarted a mass escape attempt by Daesh (ISIS) members in Al Gweran prison in Hasakah city, and managed to capture 89 in the vicinity of the prison,” the SDF Military Operation Center said on Twitter.
