MESOP LATEST : ISIS launches offensive on regime’s largest army base in Syria’s Hasakah

October 16, 2015 – ARA News – HASAKAH – Clashes broke out Thursday between the Syrian regime forces and insurgents of the Islamic State (ISIS) in the eastern countryside of Hasakah, northeast Syria, local sources reported.

Speaking to ARA News in Hasakah, media activist Delovan Mohammed reported that fierce clashes hit the vicinity of the regime-held military base of Mount Kawkab after attempts by ISIS militants to break into the base. “More than five regime forces were killed in a mortar attack by ISIS near Kawkab army base,” the source reported. “Clashes took place in the area on Thursday afternoon and continued until the midnight, before ISIS retreats towards its headquarters in the Shaddadi town south of Hasakah,” Mohammad said.Kawkab is considered the largest military camp held by pro-Assad forces in Hasakah province. In the meantime, fighter jets of the U.S.-led coalition have bombed ISIS positions in the vicinity of Shaddadi town in the southern countryside of Hasakah. There were no information on the outcomes of the strikes.ISIS is currently engaged in battles on several fronts in Hasakah province, clashing with Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) near Mount Abdulaziz in the western countryside of Hasakah, beside fighting Syrian army troops in the eastern countryside.
