Iraqi Military Planes Shell Sinjar
04.08.2014 – BasNews, Sinjar – Iraqi military planes have started to shell Sinjar neighborhoods in an effort to rid the town of Islamic State (IS) insurgents. Peshmerga forces now control 70% of the Yazidi-majority town.According to the BasNews correspondent in Sinjar, Iraqi military planes have started to bombard the south side of Sinjar after Peshmerga forces re-took the north of the town.
The Iraqi airstrikes come after the spokesperson of the General Commander of the Armed Forces, Qasim Atta said that Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki ordered the Iraqi army to assist Peshmerga forces in their fight against IS militants.
US Deputy Assistant Defense Secretary for Iraq and Iran Brett McGurk welcomed the announcement that the Iraqi Air Force will provide direct support to “courageous” Kurdish Peshmerga in ongoing battles against ISIS. The UK Deputy Ambassador to Iraq in Baghdad has also welcomed the news. Meanwhile, the Kurdistan Regional has sent aid, food and water to the Sinjar refugees on Sinjar Mountain by air. On Sunday, after IS took control of Sinjar, thousands of Sinjar residents fled to the Mountain.
