MESOP : Kurdistan Region can not declare independence: Maliki

23-4-2014 – Kurdpress – Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said neither Kurdistan Region nor any other part of the country cannot declare independence and leave Iraq.

Speaking with al-Menar TV, Maliki stated the Kurdish region is not allowed to demand independence since the request is against the constitution and is at odds with Iraq’s integrity and its federal system. He further expressed his opposition with postponing upcoming parliament election in the country, denying claims that the central government in Baghdad is marginalizing the Sunnis. “Sunnis are a big part of Iraq’s political body. Iraq has not even marginalized the groups which are thousands of times smaller than the Sunnis,” said Maliki. He also lashed out at Saudi Arabia for following interfering policies in Syria and said Riyadh will not stay at negotiation table until it will accept its inability.
