Iran Establishing Military Base in Sulaymaniyah Province: Asharq al-Awsat / The military base is to target the Iranian Kurdish forces and impeding the independence of Kurdistan Region

Hiwa Ahmed – BasNews 28 May 2016 – SULAYMANIYAH – Apparently in hopes of increasing its military influence in the region, the Iranian government is reportedly establishing a military base in Sulaymaniyah province of KurdistanThe Arabic London-based newspaper, Asharq al-Awsat, reported that Iran has started establishing the biggest military base and artillery in Sulaymaniyah province.The military base of the Iranian army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution in Sulaymaniyah province is located near the Mount Suren in Said-Sadiq district of Sulaymaniyah province, according to Sharq El-Awsat.

The Iranian fighter jets are constantly hovering over the area, aiming to secure the process of installing the artillery equipment, and transporting of the weapons and other military supplies. A Kurdish official told the newspaper on condition of anonymity that Iran has begun establishing the military base since May 7, 2016, and senior Iranian military officials have repeatedly been visiting the area to oversee the project.

The official also revealed that Iran is working on setting up the missile launching system in the base, it has so far sent a large amount of arms and ammunitions to the location. Speaking to Asharq al-Awsat, Baran Berikan, the council member of the Party of Free Life of Kurdistan (PJAK), allegedly an offshoot party of Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the Iranian Kurdistan, said that Iran has started conducting military activities near Mount Suren in Sulaymaniyah province which is an old base of Iraninan army.

Berikan revealed that the border entrances in the area have been shut due to the movement of the Iranian army and transportation of arms.

Asharq al-Awsat also reported that Iran has resumed working on the old tunnel through mountains to facilitate and secure the transport of military supplies.  The aim behind the Iranian military base in Sulaymaniyah province, according to Asharq al-Awsat, is to target the Iranian Kurdish forces based in the Kurdistan Reigon, and also to increase the Iranian hegemony over Sulayimaniyah and Halabaj provinces in order to impede the independence plan of Kurdistan Region. www.mesop.de
