The activist says Kurds are also asked to agree to Bashar al-Assad’s presidency and lay down arms

Leyla Hemid – 03/01/2017 – BASNEWS – Syrian Regime Demands Kurds Respect Sovereignty of Syria: Activist –  The Syrian regime, among other conditions, is trying to convince Kurds to carry on with the current Syrian Constitution and make no negotiations over the position of Bashar al-Assad as the future president of the country, said an activist close to the Kurdish administration in Syria.Speaking to BasNews on Tuesday, Hamo Ibrahim, a Syrian Kurdish activist, said that two weeks ago a delegation of Kurdish politicians and the officials of the Kurdish administration in northern Syria arrived in Qamishlo Airport to meet with the Russian commander and a delegation from the Syrian regime.

According to Ibrahim, a Russian plane carried the Kurdish delegation to Humaymim Base in Latakia where they met with the Russians before they convened with the Syrian regime delegation. In their meeting with the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) delegation, the Syrian delegation stressed that any sort of negotiations over the position of Bashar al-Assad as the Syrian president is “red-line” even for the upcoming elections there should be no question as whether he can or cannot nominate himself.

He added that the Syrian delegation also stressed that every party should abide by the Syrian Constitution of 2012 [the current one], without demanding a new one.At the same time the delegation pointed to the possibility of amending the current constitution in order to guarantee more rights to all the components of Syria, according to the activist.Ibrahim noted that apart from PYD, there were some other parties in the meeting, though he did not name them. He also did not comment on the meeting between the Russian commanders and Kurds. The activist added that the regime’s delegation also demanded that all the parties, except the Syrian Army, should lay down arms and allow for the state-run institutions be reestablished across the country.

The delegation did not exempt any entity from such obligations, even the PYD which has installed a de facto canton-based authority in northern Syria, as Ibrahim stated. The activist added that the Syrian delegation underlined the territorial sovereignty of Syria should be respected and that the Syrian regime will not allow for any sort of administration to divide the country. A week ago in their party’s conference, the PYD officials dropped the word Rojava (literally meaning Western Kurdistan which refers to the Syrian Kurdistan) from the designation of the Kurdish administration and changed it from Federal Democratic System of Rojava to Federal Democratic System of Northern Syria. Observers believe the omission of this word means an about-face in the policy of PYD, which seems to bend more towards the Syrian regime and warn the party is endangering the Kurdish achievements in northern Syria. www.mesop.de
