(05/001) 1 May Celebrations…
The 1 May Workers Day celebrations on Taksim Square in İstanbul and on Kızılay Square in Ankara were banned by the governors. The official meeting areas were decided to be Yenikapı in İstanbul and Sıhhıye in Ankara. Upon decision the some of the unions announced that they would celebrate on Taksim Square.
Extraordinary measures were taken by the İstanbul Governorate not to allow people to reach Taksim: Scheduled metro, bus and boat services were suspended; flights to İstanbul were also suspended. All the roads to Taksim Square were closed and no one was allowed to get on the Square.
The police started to intervene and disperse the groups gathered in Beşiktaş, Cihangir, ATrlabaşı, Mecidiyeköy and Okmeydanı. The groups were dispersed by using tear gas, water cannons and plastic bullets. According to the official announcement, 39 thousand police officers were on duty and 50 TOMAs were used during interventions.
The interventions continued the whole day. Headquarters of DİSK, revolutionary unions’ confederation, and Okmeydanı Hospital were reportedly thrown gas canisters.
The journalists were not allowed to enter the areas where heavy interventions occurred allegedly on the grounds they did not have official permission from the Governorate. 9 journalists were abounded during the incidents.
The persons who objected the use of tear gas and police brutality were also beaten or fired plactic bullets of tears gas canisters from close distance.
After the sunset, the Governor of İstanbul announced that 142 persons were detained, 90 persons were wounded the whole day. According to the figures announced by Progressive Lawyers Association, 266 persons were detained. Turkish Medical Chamber announced thousands of people were affected by tear gas.
The police did not allow people in Ankara to enter Kızılay Square and leave flowers to the place where Ethem Sarısülük was shot to death during Gezi Park demonstrations in Ankara. The police used portable walls to prevent people and also set up a portable detention unit.
The police also intervened by using tear gas, truncheons, plastic bullets and water cannons the groups who wanted to march to Kızılay after the meeting in Sıhhıye Square. Many demonstrators were wounded during the interventions.
Progressive Lawyers Association announced that 76 persons were detained under beatings in Ankara.
After the meeting on Meskan Mountain in Hakkari which was banned by the Governor, military forces prevented a group of persons who wanted to make a press announcement and detained 18 persons.
Ahmet Aslan, Mehmet Aslan, Mahsum Aslan and Serhat Aslan were attacked by a rightist group with knives after the meeting in Konya. They were all registered to Mardin. According to the news appeared on the press, one of them was heavily wounded.
The police intervened and detained 37 persons when they wanted to march to AKP premises in İzmir after the meeting.
(05/002) Death in Prison…
Murat Özenalp who convicted in the Sledgehammer Case died at the hospital on 30 April 2014. He had cerebral haemorrhage during visit on 26 April 2014 in Mamak Military Prison in Ankara. Since the driver of the prison ambulance could not be found immediately, he was allegedly taken to hospital late.
(05/003) Spice Bazaar Case…
12th Penal Chamber at the Court of Cassation continued to hear the appeal case of Pınar Selak on 30 April 2014.
Pınar Selek was convicted in the Spive Bazaar Case launched at İstanbul Heavy Penal Court No 12 after the explosion on 9 July 1998 which caused to death of 7 persons. 127 persons were also wounded in the explosion.
The lawyers of Pınar Selek presented an animation proving the the explosion was caused by gas tube. The Chamber adjourned the hearing to 11 June 2014.

According the news appeared on the press on 2 May 2014, S.B., student in Gazi Ortaokulu in Çanakkale and suffering from Down syndrome, was beaten by the teacher for being mischievous.
(05/005) Persons Convicted…
According to the news appeared on the press on 1 May 2014, Derik (Mardin) Penal Court of First Instance concluded to hear the case against 62 persons launched on charges of violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations.
The case was launched in connection with the press announcement made by the defendants to support the hunger strikes in the prisons started on 12 September 2012 by the inmates convicted or on trial in PKK cases.
The court sentenced each defendant to 1 year and 6 months’ imprisonment.
(05/006) Writer Convicted…
On 30 April 2014, İstanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2 concluded to hear the case against Bekir Coşkun, writer with the daily Cumhuriyet, launched in connection with expressions he used in a column released on 4 September 2014.
The case was launched upon official complant by AKP MPs Metin Külünk, Mihriban Belma Satır, Tülay Selamoğlu, Sevde Beyazıt Kaçar, Sevim Savaşer and Ayşenur İslamoğlu.
The court sentenced Bekir Coşkun for insulting public officers to 1 year and 2 months and 17 days’ imprisonment under the Article 125 TPC.
(05/007) Gezi Park Trials…
On 30 April 2014, Antalya Heavy Penal Court of First Instance No 5 started to hear the case launched against 5 persons on charges of violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations for attending Gezi Park demonstrations in Antalya.
After the testimonies of the defendants Ayşe Deniz Karacagil, Mustafa Cihan Yılmaz, Hacı Bey Temur, Naim Doğan and Ersin Elyakut, the court adjourned the hearing to 13 June 2014.
The defendants are also on trial at Antalya Heavy Penal Court No 5 for the same charges.
(05/008) Workers Protest Intervened…
The police intervened the action staged on 30 April 2014 by the workers in front of the Directorate for Privatisation Administration to protest in the privatisation of Yatağan, Yeniköy and Kemerköy thermal plants in Muğla. The workers tried to chain themselves and the police detained 17 workers.

On 30 April 2014, the police intervened and dispersed with tear gas a group of people who wanted to protest the detention of 7 members or executives of BDP in Tatvan district of Bitlis. 10 persons were detained during the intervention.

The police conducted house raids on 30 April 2014 in Nevşehir and detained 14 Kurdish students of Hacı Bektaş Veli University. The reason of the raids was not disclosed.

The police detained 11 students of Dicle University under beatings on 30 April 2014 on the allegations of having fight with the members of Bilge Gençlik Club which is close to the political party Hür Dava Partisi which is known to be close to Turkish Hezbollah.

7 members or executives of BDP in Tatvan district of Bitlis who were detained during house raids conducted on 29 April 2014 for attending demonstrations staged on 15 February 2015 on the anniversary of Abdullah Öcalan’s being brought to Turkey were arrested on 30 April 2014 on the allegations of “being member of an illegal organisation”.

3 persons who were among 18 members of People’s Front detained during house raids conducted on 28 April 2014 in Küçükarmutlu quarter of Sarıyer district in İstanbul in connection with a “DHKP-C investigation” were arrested on 1 May 2014 on the allegations of “being member of an illegal organisation”.

(05/014) Sexual Assault in Prison…
According to the news appeared on the press on 4 May 2014, F.O. (15) was raped by M.A. when he was in Ceyhan (Adana) M-type Prison.
Though F.O. complained to the prison administration about verbal and physical assaults of M.A., his cell was not changed. He reportedly scared to mention rapes.
(05/015) Torture Case in Mersin…
According to the news appeared on the press, a court case was launched against the police officer Osman Deniz on charges of torture for beating D.Ö. (8) in a park on 11 September 2013 in Mersin.
3 police officers will be also on trial in this case for “fraud on official documents” for changing the documents concerning the incident. The indictment wants these officers to be sentenced up to 2 years’ imprisonment.
Mersin Heavy Penal Court No 1 will start to hear the case.

On 3 May 2014, an armed clash occurred between the villagers from Samanlı village of Derecik town in Hakkari and soldiers. The villagers were reportedly going to Kurdistan Federal Region for border trade. 5 villagers, one of them heavily, and one soldier were wounded during the incident.

Neesan Mehmud Neesan (42) was wounded when soldiers opened fire when a group of people tried on 2 May 2014 to pass the border from Dêrsiwan village in Rojava region in Syria to Kilis to provide humanitarian needs.

One person was wounded when a sound bomb exploded on 2 May 2014 in front of Kayaşehir Police Station in Başakşehir district of İstanbul.

Ramazan Özalp (46) incarcerated in Metris (İstanbul) R-type Prison was hospitalised on 2 May 2014. He was given a medical report by the Forensic Institute certifying that should be released for having cancer and paralysis, but was not released upon opinion of İdil Gendarmerie Commandership alleging that he would be used for propaganda if released.

Bedrettin Akdeniz incarcerated in Kürkçüler (Adana) F-type Prison was taken back to the prison from hospital on 3 May 2014 without being treated on the grounds that he rejected to be examined being handcuffed.

20 prisoners incarcerated in Kandıra (Kocaeli) F-type Prison No 1 set the beds to fire on 2 May 2015 to protest in the conditions in prison.
After the extinguishing the fire and repressing the uprising, 60 inmates were reportedly transferred to several prisons in 8 different cities.

Nihat Tarhan, editor English pages of Dicle News Agency, was detained on 4 May 2014 during an ID control in Yüksekova district of Hakkari on the grounds that there was an search warrant issued against him.

On 6 May 2014, Samsun Penal Court of First Instance No 5 will start to hear the case against 33 persons launched for attending Gezi park demonstrations in Samsun on 1 June 2013. The indictment wants the defendants to be sentenced for violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations, “damaging public property” and “resisting security forces”.

The police intervened the demonstration on 4 May 2014 in Van staged to protest in the construction new military stations in Hakkari, Diyarbakır and Tunceli. The police used tear gas and water cannons, 12 children were detained under beatings.

H.B. (13), H.K. (13) , D.D. (11) and B.Y. (11) were detained by the police on 4 May 2014 in Nusaybin district of Mardin for throwing stones to surveillance cameras.

Ramazan Duman who was among 8 persons including 2 children detained during house raids conducted on 29 April 2014 for going the restricted area Meskan Mountain was arrested on 2 May 2014 on the allegations of “being member of an illegal organisation”.

(05/029) Killing by Unidentified Assailants Investigation…
Kırıkkale Heavy Penal Court started on 5 May 2014 to hear the case against Hasköy Gendarmerie Station Commander Captain B.K., Infantry First Lieutenant H.A., Gökyazı Gendarmerie Station Commander Master-Sergeant T.N. and Special Operations Division Deputy Director Ş.U. who were on duty on 17 May 1993 when house of a family set to fire in Altınova town of Korkut district in Muş on the grounds that the family was “aiding and abetting illegal organisation”. Nasır Öğüt (43), his wife Eşref Öğüt (43), their children Sevim Öğüt (13), Sevda Öğüt (12), Şakir Öğüt (11), Mehmet Şirin Öğüt (8), Cihat Öğüt, Aycan Öğüt (1), and Cihan Öğüt (4) died during the fire and the indictment wants the defendants to be sentenced 9 times to life imprisonment.
The indictment was prepared by Public Prosecutor in Muş, but the case was transferred to Kırıkkale for alleged security reasons.
After hearing the testimonies of the defendants and the lawyers of Öğüt family, the court rejected the demand for the arrest of the defendants and adjourned the hearing to 22 September 2014 for the completion of crime scene exploration.

The temporary village guards wearing cloths similar to PKK militants reportedly beat villagers for hours in Karpuzlu village of Kulp district in Diyarbakır on 5 May 2014.
(05/031) Pressures in Prisons…
Şerife Erbay, Özlem Cihan and Satiye Ok, incarcerated in Bakırköy (İstanbul) Women Prison, were reportedly taken back to the prison from Sadi Konuk State Hospital on 5 May 2014 without being treated for objecting the existence of gendarmerie soldiers in the examination room.

İstanbul Heavy Penal Court No 55 continued on 6 May 2014 to hear the case against 255 persons launched on charges of “violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations”, “damaging a sanctuary [Cami of Bezmi Alem] by means of making dirty”, “using special clothing illegally”, “damaging public property” and “resisting security forces”. The case was launched for having attending Gezi Park demonstrations in İstanbul and 7 defendants are non-Turkish citizens in this trial.
After the identification and testimonies of 32 defendants at the first hearing, the court will continue to hear the case on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays until the 27 May 2014.

The police detained 3 persons on 6 May 2014 on the grounds it was forbidden to stage demonstrations on Taksim Square in İstanbul when they wanted to open a placard to commemorate Deniz Gezmiş, Yusuf Aslan and Hüseyin İnan whose death penalties were executed on 6 May 1972.

Siirt Heavy Penal Court No 1 continued on 5 May 2014 to hear the case against 27 persons launched after the operations conducted in 2011 in Kurtalan district of Siirt in connection with a ”KCK Investigation”. 5 of the defendants are remanded in this case.
After the testimonies of the defendants, the court decided continuation of the confinement of the remanded defendants. The court adjourned the hearing to 25 April 2014.

Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 3 dealt with the release demand of Zeynep Altınkaya, Mehmet Ali Alkan and Başak Özel who were the last 3 remanded defendants in the case launched after the operations conducted on 8 March 2012 in connection with an KCK investigation against the persons who attended or delivered courses in Academy of Politics organised by BDP in Kayapınar district of Diyarbakır.
The court decided to release the defendants to be tried without remand.

Siirt Heavy Penal Court No 1 continued on 5 May 2014 to hear the case against 15 persons launched in connection with a KCK investigation against the members of Patriotic Democratic Youth in 2013 in Siirt. 7 defendants are remanded in this trial.
After giving of evidence, the court decided to release the defendant Şafi Tunç to be tried without remand and adjourned the hearing to 6 June 2014.

Siirt Heavy Penal Court No 1 continued on 5 May 2014 to hear the case launched against 63 persons on charges of “being member of an illegal organisation”. The case was launched in connection with a KCK investigation in 2013 in Siirt and 4 defendants are remanded in this trial.
The court decided to release the defendants Abdullah Altun, Fesih Kaya and İbrahim Akın to be tried without remand and also continuation of the confinement of Gürhan Koyuncu. The court adjourned the hearing to 12 June 2014.

Siirt Heavy Penal Court No 1 started on 5 May 2014 to hear the case against 6 persons launched on chargers of “aiding and abetting an illegal organisation”. The case was launched after the operations conducted on 15 October 2013 in Siirt and 4 defendants are remanded in this trial.
After the identification and testimonies of the defendants, the court decided to release Veysi Çalkın to be tried without remand and adjourned the hearing.

Bületnt Gerçek incarcerated in Tunceli A-3-type Prison for being convicted in a rape case allegedly committed suicide on 7 May 2014 by hanging himself.

Ceyhan Peace Penal Court No 2 banned the publication of news concerning the rape incident in Ceyhan (Adana) M-type Prison. According to the news appeared on the press on 4 May 2014, F.O. (15) was raped by M.A. when he was in the prison.
The decision was reportedly taken upon demand of the Public Prosecutor.
Though F.O. complained to the prison administration about verbal and physical assaults of M.A., his cell was not changed. He reportedly scared to mention rapes.
(05/041) Lynching Attempt in Ankara…
A group of persons stoned on the night of 7 May a house where Syrian refugees live allegedly because they beat a person from the neighbourhood in Altındağ district of Ankara. The police intervened the incident and dispersed the crowd. The Syrians were taken to police station, but the afterwards the crowd gathered and set the house fire. According to the news, 7 persons were wounded during the incident.

Ramazan Özalp (46) who was transferred to Metris (İstanbul) R-type Prison on 20 April 2014 for medical examinations in Forensic Institute was sent back to the Gaziantep H-type Prison on 6 May 2014.

Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 2 concluded ton 7 May 2014 to hear the case against Rezan Zuğurli (25), CO-Mayor of Lice district of Diyarbakır for BDP, launched on charges of “committing crime in the name of an illegal organisation by attending illegal demonstrations”.
After the final defence of the lawyers, the court sentenced Rezan Zuğurli to 4 years and 2 months’ imprisonment for “despite not being a member of the illegal organisation, committing crime in the name of an illegal organisation”.
(05/044) Persons on Trial…
According to the news appeared on the press on 7 May 2014, a court case was launched against 10 persons on charges of “making propaganda of an illegal organisation”. According to the news gathered, the defendants sang Kurdish songs during a wedding ceremony in Kulu district of Konya.
The indictment wants the defendants to be sentenced under the Article 7/2 of Anti-Terror Law. Konya Heavy Penal Court No 4 will start to hear the case on 6 June 2014.

İstanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 48 continued on 7 May 2014 to hear the case against Goncagül Telek, editor-in-chief with ETHA news agency, on charges of “slander and insult” for releasing torture histories of people on Sedat Selim Ay who was appointed as Security Director responsible with fight to terrorism in 1990
The case launched upon official complaint by Sedat Selim Ay and the court decided on 5 February 2014 for the abatement of the proceedings relying on the Law on Probation.
Upon objection to the decision, the trial started on 7 May again. After the opinion as to the accusations, the Public Prosecutor wanted the charges slander to be dropped and the defendant to be sentenced for insult.
The court adjourned the hearing to 9 September 2014 for the preparation of defence.
(05/046) KCK Trial in Mardin…
Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 2 continued on 7 May 2014 to hear the case against 4 persons (2 of them remanded) launched in connection with a “KCK investigation” in 2011 in Mardin. The indictment wants the defendants to be sentenced for “being member of an illegal organisation”.
The court prevented the defendants from testifying in Kurdish and adjourned the hearing to 6 June 2014 for the testimonies to be taken in Kurdish if they cover the expenses of the interpreter.

The police conducted house raids on 7 May 2014 in Samsun in connection with a “DHKP-C investigation” and detained D.B. and H.A. on the allegations of “member of an illegal organisation”.

The police conducted house raids on 7 May 2014 in Diyadin district of Ağrı and detained 4 persons on the allegations of “aiding and abetting an illegal organisation”.

(05/049) Cem Aygün Case…
Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 4 continued on 8 May 2014 to hear the case against the police officer Fatih Yılmaz launched on charges of killing Cem Aygün (24) on 30 August 2014 in Keçiören district of Ankara for not obeying stop warning.
The defendants did not appear in the court. The Public Prosecutor presented his/her opinion as to the accusations and demanded the defendant to be sentenced to 16 years’ imprisonment in accordance with the expert’s report.
The court issued an arrest warrant against the defendant and adjourned the hearing to 22 May 2014.

2 Kurdish students reportedly attacked by a ultra-nationalist group on the night of 8 May 2014 when they were going home in Cebeci quarter of Ankara. Students were hospitalised and one of them was wounded heavily.
(05/051) Person Beaten by Private Security Guards…
Gökhan Sercan (26) announced that he was beaten by 5 private security guards who awaken in metro when he fell asleep on 6 May 2014 in İstanbul. The victim stressed that he was beaten till he fainted and the guards took him out of the metro station. He also added that he had retinal detachment due to beatings.

Samsun Penal Court of First Instance No 5 concluded on 9 May 2014 to hear the case against 9 persons launched on charges of “violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations” and “resisting public officers”. The court acquitted all the defendants.
The case was launched after the defendants threw eggs during the visit of Student Selection and Placement Centre Chair Ali Demir on 20 February 2012 in Samsun 19th May University.

The police conducted house raids on 8 May 2014 in Silopi district of Şırnak and detained 4 persons including one child. The reason of the raids was not disclosed.

According to the news appeared on the press on 10 May 2014, Public Prosecutor in İzmir completed the indictment against 92 persons who attended Gezi Park demonstrations in İzmir on 4 June 2013 in Bayraklı district of İzmir.
The indictment wants the defendants to be sentenced for “violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations”, “damaging public property” and “resisting security forces”. If the submitted indictment is accepted by the court, the case will be heard at Penal Court of First Instance.

On 9 May 2014, Şanlıurfa Heavy Penal Court No 1 continued to hear the case against 26 persons (9 of them remanded) launched on charges of “being members of KCK City Assembly”.
The case was launched after the house raids conducted in 2012 in connection with a KCK investigation.
After the testimonies of the defendants and defence of the lawyers, the court decided for the continuation of the remand of the defendants and adjourned the hearing to 18 July 2014.

(05/065) Ali İsmail Korkmaz Case…
On 12 May 2014, Kayseri Heavy Penal Court No 3 continued to hear the case against 5 civilians (all remanded) and 3 police officers on charges of killing Ali İsmail Korkmaz (19). During the Gezi Park demonstration in Eskişehir on 3 June 2013, Ali İsmail Korkmaz was beaten with sticks by unidentified persons when he was escaping from police violence. He died one month later on 10 July 2013.
The case was transferred to Kayseri from Eskişehir for security reasons. All the defendants and eyewitnesses were present at the hearing. New video recordings of the incident were also screened at the hearing. All the eyewitnesses testified to the effect that they saw the remanded defendants beating Ali İsmail Korkmaz. The defendants rejected the allegations.
After 12 hours of hearing, the court decided to the continuation of the confinement of the remanded defendants and adjourned the hearing to 14 July 2014.

Çorum Heavy Penal Court No 2 continued on 12 May 2014 to hear the case against Ankara Gendarmerie Regional Commander Musa Çitil launched on charges of being involved the killings of 13 persons by unidentified assailants in Derik district of Mardin when Musa Çitil was the gendarmerie commander in the region.
The case was launched in Mardin, but transferred to Çorum upon the demand of Çitil’s lawyers for security reasons. After Public Prosecutor’s opinion as to the accusations, the court adjourned the hearing to 21 May 2014 for the preparation of the defence as to the accusations.

According to the news appeared on the press on 13 May 2014, Public Prosecutor in Malatya prepared an indictment against 4 executives and members of Socialist Party of the Oppressed for attending Gezi Park demonstrations in Malatya.
The indictment wants the defendants Ayhan Yener, Ayşe Işık, Serdar Yücekaya and Hikmet Kırıktaş to be sentenced for “founding an illegal organisation”, “being member or leading member an illegal organisation” and “making propaganda of an illegal organisation”.

On 12 May 2014, İstanbul Heavy Penal Court No 3 dealt with the release demand of 7 defendants in the 3rd KCK/TM main case. The case was launched against 44 persons after the operations conducted on 20 December 2011 against the media workers in connection with KCK investigation.
The court decided to release all the remanded defendants. But Mikail Barut was not released for being remanded in another case.

İstanbul Peace Penal Court No 18 started on 13 May 2014 to hear the case against the police officer Fatih Zengin (23). He was the police officer who sprayed tear gas on Ceyda Sungur (aka woman in red) on 28 May 2013 when people gathered in Gezi Park.
The indictment wants the officer to be sentenced up to 2 years’ imprisonment and dismissal from profession for misconduct of duty by not following the regulations on use of tear gas and intervention to public demonstrations. The defendant was not present at the hearing.
After the testimony of the plaintiff, the court adjourned the hearing to 25 June 2014 for the completion of deficient documents.

İzmir Peace Penal Court No 12 started on 13 May 2014 to hear the case against 17 persons launched on charges of “resisting security forces”. The defendants were detained under beatings on 28 December 2014 in İzmir during the commemoration of Roboski Massacre.
The court started to hear the testimonies of the complainant police officers and adjourned the hearing to 10 November 2014 for the completion of the testimonies.

Erzurum Heavy Penal Court No 1 started on 13 May 2014 to hear the case against 8 members of Democratic Patriotic Youth Assembly launched after the operations conducted on 23 June 2013 in Erzurum in connection with a KCK investigation. After the identification of the defendants, the court decided to release all the defendants to be tried without remand and adjourned the hearing.

(05/082) Mine Disaster in Soma…
The number of causalities in Soma mine disaster increased to 282 as of 15 May 2014. The incident allegedly occurred due to explosion of electric transformer during the change of shift. According to the news gathered, insufficient supervision of governmental institutions led to the disaster. Neither the company nor the government announced the number of miners who were in the mine at the time of the incident.
Prime Minister visited Soma on 14 May 2014 and made a press announcement alleging that such disasters were usual in the sector like mining. He also added that no procedural act was taken against the owner and officials of the mine company.
One person who wanted to protest Prime Minister was detained under beatings by the guards of the Prime Minister. When another person objected the incident he was also tried to be beaten. Upon this the crowd started to protest the Prime Minister and his guards, they had to take shelter in a market. Meanwhile the photos of Yusuf Yerkel, one of the Prime Minister’s advisors, were taken when he was kicking someone several times when gendarmerie soldiers were detaining him.
Protest were organised in several cities on 14 May 2014. The police did not allow the protest in the cities like Ankara, İstanbul, İzmir, Tunceli, Artvin, Kocaeli, Aydın, Adana and used tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. 11 persons were wounded during the heavy interventions of the police in Ankara, Kocaeli and İstanbul, 62 persons were detained for attending the protests. Socialist Party of the Oppressed was given TL 762 fine sentence in Adana for writing slogans on the road about Soma disaster.

Saada Darwich (28) was shot to death by soldiers when she wanted to pass the border from Rojova to Turkey with her family on 18 May 2014. Şırnak Governorate made an announcement and alleged that the killing occurred due to misunderstanding.

Ankara Heavy Penal Court no 1 started on 16 May 2014 to hear the case against 19 persons including Mahmut Yıldırım aka Yeşil, Mehmet Ağar and Korkut Eken launched for the 18 killings by unidentified assailants in 1990s.
After the presentations of the lawyers of both defendants and complainants, the court decided to combine the file of Abdülmecit Baskın who was killed by unidentified assailants with the existing case. The court also ruled the defendants including Mehmet Ağar to be forcibly taken to the next hearing and adjourned the hearing to 11 July 2014.

Rescue work in the mine started after the fire on 13 May 2014 which led to death of 301 workers was stopped on 17 May 2014.
The massacre in the mine was protested in several cities. The police intervened all the protests by using tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets. The police detained 40 persons in İzmir on 15 May 2014, 6 children in Van, 2 persons in Erzurum and 7 persons in Adana.
The police also detained 12 persons in Ankara and O.K. (17) was shot at head with tear gas canister. D.Y. (16) was reportedly shot at face with rubber bullet in Adana. 13 persons were detained in Mersin and 2 persons were reportedly wounded with rubber bullets.
A group of extreme rightists raided the teachers’ house in Soma where members of Progressive Lawyers Association including Chairman Selçuk Kozağaçlı were staying and tried to lynch them. The police and officials prevented the incident.
On 16 May 2014, the police reportedly detained 77 persons in İzmir, 50 persons in Ankara, 22 persons in İstanbul during the protests. The police also attacked the protesters in Soma and detained 7 persons. During the intervention in Siirt, 2 persons were allegedly detained and 5 persons were wounded.
On 17 May, the police intervened a group of persons who wanted to stage a protest action in Güvanpark in Ankara on the allegations that Ankara Governorate banned all the demonstrations in Ankara. 11 persons were detained during the protests. The police raided houses and hotels in Soma and detained 36 persons including 8 members of Progressive Lawyers Association. The detainees were taken to sports hall in Soma and subjected to torture. Governorate in Manisa announced that all the demonstrations in Soma were banned.
The police intervened the demonstration in Tuzluçayır quarter of Mamak district in Ankara on 18 May 2014. A.E.B. (16) was heavily wounded when s/he was shot with blast bomb. 9 persons were detained in İstanbul the same day.
8 persons including CEO of Soma Mining Company Can Gürkan were arrested in connection with the investigation concerning the Soma massacre.
(05/091) Diyarbakır Prison Massacre Trial…
Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 3 continued on 15 May 2014 to hear the retrial of the case launched in connection with the killing of 10 prisoners under beatings on 24 September 1996 in Diyarbakır E-type Prison.
62 persons including 29 soldiers, 36 police officers, one physician, 2 prison administrators, 4 guards are on trial in this case. Lawyers of the defendants alleged that the defendants were not promoted due to the case and the court adjourned the hearing to decide before the supreme military council meeting.
On 24 September 1996 hundreds of soldiers, officers and guardians had attacked on 33 prisoners with sticks, and batons in Diyarbakır Prison and killed 10 of them. The rest of the prisoners were transferred to Gaziantep E Type of Closed Prison.
The case against 72 defendants was concluded on 27 February 2014 and the court acquitted 3 defendants and the accusations against 7 defendants were suspended due to lapse of time. The court sentenced 62 defendants to 5 years’ imprisonment and 3 years’ suspension from public duty for “killing more than one person beyond intention” and misconduct of duty”.

Anadolu (İstanbul) Peace Penal Court No 32 concluded on 15 May 2014 to hear the case 40 users of the web site Ekşi Sözlük launched on charges of “insulting religious beliefs of a group of people” by means of entries concerning İslam released on the web site. The case was launched upon official complaint by Ali Emre Bukağlı.
The court sentenced the owner of the site Sedat Kaplanoğlu to 10 months imprisonment and Özgür Kuru to 7 months and 15 days’ imprisonment. The defendant Altuğ Şahin was acquitted and the proceedings against 37 persons were suspended.

(05/096) Çayan Birben Investigation…
Yalova Heavy Penal Court started on 20 May 2014 to hear the case against police officers İbrahim Baltacı, Ercüment Küçükakça, Serhat Ayhan Yeni and Tekin Ceyhan launched in connection with the death of Çayan Birben.
The defendants testified at the hearing to the effect that the real victims were the defendants for being accused with murder. The court rejected the arrest of the defendants and adjourned the hearing to 23 September 2014.
On 27 May 2012, the police used tear gas to break up a fight in Abdullah Baştürk Park in Yalova. Çayan Birben who was suffering from asthma was hospitalised due to use of tear gas and died on 30 May 2012 in the hospital.
Forensic Institute issued a medical report on 12 February 2013 certifying that the use of tear gas might have caused the death.
The case against the officers was launched at Yalova Heavy Penal Court and the Court decided not to be responsible with case and sent the file to Heavy Penal Court of First Instance. But Heavy Penal Court of First Instance sent the file back to the Heavy Penal Court.
Yalova Heavy Penal Court insisted on not to be responsible with case and 5th Penal Chamber at the Court of Cassation ruled that Yalova Heavy Penal Court is responsible with case.
(05/097) Shopkeeper Beaten by the Police…
Erol Polan, shopkeeper in Fatih district of İstanbul, was beaten on the street and in his shop by both police officers and municipality officers who were conducting an operation against street peddlers on 19 May 2014. The officers alleged that Erol Polan resisted the security forces and tried to prevent them to conduct the operation. But the video recordings of the incident showed that he neither attacked nor resisted the police officers. Officers kept beating him for minutes. After the recordings circulated on the internet, İstanbul Governor announced that the police officer who beat Erol Polan was suspended from duty.

Anadolu (İstanbul) Heavy Penal Court No 8 continued on 21 May 2014 to hear the case against Mehmet Görkem Demirbaş (19) and Cengiz Aktaş launched in connection with the killing of Mehmet Ayvalıtaş (21). On 2 June 2013, the defendants drove their car into the crowd during a Gezi Park demonstration in Ümraniye district in İstanbul and caused the death of Mehmet Ayvalıtaş.
After the testimonies of the eyewitnesses, the court adjourned the hearing to 22 September 2014.

İstanbul Heavy Penal Court No 2 continued on 21 May 2014 to hear the case against 11 police officers launched on charges of torture.
The indictment wants the defendants to be sentenced to terms of imprisonment up to 12 years. In his opinion as to the accusations, the Public Prosecutor wanted the defendants to be sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment on the grounds of being proven guilty f the offence. The Public Prosecutor also asked a criminal complaint to be issued against the police officers who did not intervene the torture incident on the allegations of “not preventing crime and not collecting evidences”.
The court adjourned the hearing to 13 October 2014 for the preparation of the defence.
On 18 June 2012, Ahmet Koca (23) was driving a pregnant relative of his to the hospital in Fatih district of İstanbul. When he was stopped on a control point by the police, he objected and tried to explain they had to go hospital. The incident was recorded by a phone and it was revealed that he was beaten by 10 police officers for objecting and talking in Kurdish, some of the police officers hit him with belts, and was detained afterwards. The police officers kept beating him in the police vehicle and did not take him to the police station.

Uğur Kurt who was in the garden of Djemevi in Okmeydanı for a funeral was shot at his throat. Uğur Kurt was hospitalised, but died in the hospital in the evening.

The defendant Fatih Yılmaz who was arrested on 21 May 2014 testified at the hearing.
The court sentenced Fatih Yılmaz to 11 years and 8 months’ imprisonment for “intentionally killing someone”.

According to the news appeared on the press on 23 May 2014, Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 7 concluded to hear the case against the police officer Mehmet Fatih Korkmaz launched on charges of killing Özgür Arda (30).
Though the indictment wanted the defendant to be sentenced for intentional killing, the court sentenced him to 1 year 4 months and 20 days’ imprisonment reckless killing after the final defence and the presentations of the lawyers. The court also suspended the sentence on the grounds that the court did not have the opinion that the convict would commit crime again.
On 22 December 2012, Özgür Arda was shot to death from behind in Sur district of Diyarbakır for not obeying stop warning. He was on the run after escaping from Ceyhan (Adana) M-type Prison.

Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 6 continued on 26 May 2014 to hear the case against police officer Ahmet Şahbaz launched in connection with the killing of Ethem Sarısülük on 1 June 2013 during Gezi Park demonstrations in Ankara.
The defendant used his right to remain silent at the hearing. The court rejected the demand for the arrest of the defendant and adjourned the hearing to 7 July 2014.
In this trial, the court first rejected the indictment on the grounds there was no official permission for the trail of the police officer. But the Public Prosecutor objected the decision on the grounds that “killing was not among the duties and responsibilities of the police officers”. Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 7 accepted the objection of the Public Prosecutor on 19 July 2014 and suspended the decision not to try police officer.

Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 1 continued on 26 May 2014 to hear the case against the police officers B.Ö., H.A. and N.Ö. launched on charges of causing death of Enes Ata (8).
The defendants did not appear at the hearing. After the testimonies of the witnesses, the lawyer of Enes Ata’s family announced that the cloths Enes Ata were destroyed without court decision. The court rejected the demand for the arrest of the defendants and adjourned the hearing for the testimonies of the defendants.
On 28 March 2006, the police intervened the funeral of PKK militants in Diyarbakır. 10 persons were killed and 400 persons were wounded during the incidents. Public Prosecutor asked for permission to start an investigation against the police officers B.Ö., H.A. and N.Ö. in connection with the killing of Enes Ata (8), but Diyarbakır Governorate did not allow the investigation on 25 July 2012 on the grounds the perpetrator could not be identified. Public Prosecutor objected the decision and Diyarbakır Regional Administrative Court suspended the decision on 4 December 2012.

On 26 May 2014, Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 7 started to hear the case launched in connection with the disappearances of 11 villagers after being detained on 9 October 1993 in Alacakaya village of Kulp district in Diyarbakır.
The case was transferred to Ankara upon demand of the defendant retired Major General Yavuz Ertürk’s lawyer for security reason. Yavuz Ertürk was Commander of Bolu 2nd Commando Brigade on the day of the incident and the Brigade was conducting operations in the region.
Yavuz Ertürk did not appear at the hearing. The court rejected the demand for the transfer of the case back to Diyarbakır and arrest of Yavuz Ertürk, and adjourned the hearing.

According to the news appeared on the press, İstanbul Heavy Penal Court No 2 accepted on 16 April 2014 the indictment concerning the death of Murat Yavuzcan (35) which was prepared relying on new evidences.
The court previously decided not to prosecute for lack of grounds for legal action. But the newly acquired recordings of the incident shows one guard pulling a rope from the loophole of Murat Yavuzcan’s cell and another guard putting the rope in his pocket to hide.
Murat Yavuzcan (35) incarcerated in Ümraniye (İstanbul) E-type Prison allegedly hanged himself in a single-cell on 10 December 2013.

İstanbul Heavy Penal Court No 55 continued on 27 May 2014 to hear the case against 255 persons launched on charges of “violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations”, “damaging a sanctuary [Cami of Bezmi Alem] by means of making dirty”, “using special clothing illegally”, “damaging public property”, and “resisting security forces”. The case was launched for having attending Gezi Park demonstrations in İstanbul and 7 defendants are non-Turkish citizens in this trial.
The court hears the case since 6 May 2014. The court issued arrest warrants against 47 defendants who did not appear and testify at the hearings, and adjourned the hearing to 14 November 2014.

Kamuran Altay who did not obey stop warning and drove away from police control on 23 May 2014 in Erciş district of Van for not having a driving license crashed a wall while the police was chasing him and died.
The family of Kamuran Altay made an official complaint on 29 May 2014 against the police officers who were chasing him, but moved away when they saw the accident.

Uğur Kurt who was in the garden of Djemevi in Okmeydanı for a funeral was shot at his throat on 22 May 2014. He was hospitalised, but died in the hospital in the evening.
According to the news appeared on the press on 29 May 2014, the bullet which killed Uğur Kurt was fired from the weapon of the police officer S.K. who was in charge at Anti-Terror branch. Though his name was not given by his chief, examination of the weapons of the officers who attended the operation revealed that the bullet was fired from his gun. The Public Prosecutor asked permission for investigation from İstanbul Governorate.

İzmir Heavy Penal Court No 1 accepted on 29 May 2014 to be responsible with the case of Bahtiyar Aydın’s killing.
The case launched in connection with the killing of Brigadier General Bahtiyar Aydın by an unidentified assassin was transferred to Eskişehir Heavy Penal Court No 1 for security reasons. Eskişehir Heavy Penal Court No 1 took the decision of non-jurisdiction on the grounds that the court was not specially authorized court. 5th Penal Chamber at the Court of Cassation sent the files of the case to İzmir Heavy Penal Court on 24 February 2014.
The lawyers of the defendants Eşref Hatipoğlu and Tünay Yanardağ wanted previously the case to be transferred to another province for security reasons.
Gendarmerie Regional Commander Brigadier General Bahtiyar Aydın went to Lice district of Diyarbakır for investigation right after the incident which led to killing of 14 civilians and 1 soldier. He was shot to death in the garden of the gendarmerie station by an unidentified assassin.

Servet Daldalan (33) was beaten by the police in Söke district of Aydın. According to the news appeared on the press, the police conducted a house raid against N.T. against whom an arrest warrant was issued. Servet Daldalan was watching the raid on the sidewalk. But the police detained him on the grounds he was trying to aid N.T. He was beaten in the police vehicle and his chin was broken. There were also traces of beatings and bruises on his body.
Aydın Governor Erol Ayyıldız made an announcement and denied the torture allegations. He alleged that Servet Daldalan resisted security forces and detained for hitting two police officers.

On 28 May 2014, Gaziantep Penal Court of First Instance No 6 continued on 28 May 2014 to hear the case against police officers Murat Tabur, Fatih Mert, Şehmus Babat, Önder Özaslan, Yusuf Kılıç, Hüseyin Aksüt, Mehmet Emin Bozkoyun and Nihat Belhan launched on charges of “wounding and insult”. The officers detained 4 persons in 2012 due to a dispute between two groups after a car accident. The officer beat the detainees and also sprayed tear gas in the police vehicle.
The detainees are also on trial in the same case on charges of “resisting security forces”.
The court decided not to be responsible with the case on the grounds that the offence committed was torture under the Article 94 TPC.

After the final defence, the court sentenced Mehmet Gölebatmaz to TL 6,080 fine for “insulting a public officer”.

The police interned the demonstrations in several cities on the Anniversary of Gezi Park demonstrations which started on 31 May 2013. Upon order of the Prime Minister saying “whatever needs to be done will be done”.
Before the police attack, the Gezi Park was closed at 7.00 pm for public use. 25 thousand police officers and 50 TOMAs were on duty for the interventions in İstanbul. According to the figures provided by official and unofficial sources at least 203 persons were detained in İstanbul.
The police also intervened demonstrations in other cities. 77 persons in Ankara, 76 persons in İzmir, 27 persons in Adana, and 3 persons in Tunceli were detained.
The demonstrations continued on 1 June 2014 in Ankara and the police detained 41 persons on 1 June 2014.
