PUK delegation to visit Iran

14.07.2014 – Nuwar Faqie – BasNews, Sulaimaniyah – A Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) delegation is soon to visit Iran to meet senior officials. A PUK source that spoke on condition of anonymity told BasNews that Iraq’s first Lady and member of PUK political bureau Hero Talabani will lead the delegation, which will also consist of Senior PUK leaders Adel Murad and Najmadin Karim.

The source explained that the aim of the visit will be to talk about PUK-Tehran relations and Kurdish independence.

Iran has categorically rejected Kurdish independence in Iraqi Kurdistan, stating that it is an Israeli idea aimed at sparking further instability in the region.

PUK has close relations with Iran and during April’s Iraqi elections reports surfaced of Iranian intervention in favor of the PUK, particularly in Sulaymaniyah, the stronghold of both the PUK and its rival Gorran (Change Movement). Iran has been active in the crisis that engulfed Iraq last month, mobilizing soldiers and military planes to fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (ISIS). Reports reveal that 23 Iranian soldiers have already lost their lives in the fighting.
