MESOP FLASH : KRG to Arm Yazidi Fighters
21.08.2014 – Hemin Salih – BasNews, Erbil – A Kurdish Yazidi commander currently fighting Islamic State (IS) militants on Sinjar Mountain in northern Iraq tells BasNews they will soon be receiving additional weapons from Kurdistan.
Qassim Shashou, who has been fighting the Jihadi group since the Sinjar capture earlier this month, reported that in the past week they have received some ammunition and small weaponry, and will be receiving heavy artillery in the near future from the KRG.
Shashou personally spoke with Masrour Barzani, the head of the Kurdistan Region’s National Security Council, who is eager to arm the Peshmerga.
“We are looking forward to receiving the weapons which will be vital in our fight against IS. After we free Sinjar, we can return to our homes with our head held high”, said Shashou.He also revealed that currently there is backup Peshmerga force is with them on Sinjar Mountain and its expected more forces to arrive in near future. “Kurdish Peshmerga forces, along with US and Iraqi airstrikes, have caused a great deal of damage to the terrorist group in Zumar. This will make it easier for us to free Sinjar,” Added Shashou.He concluded passionately that he refuses to leave the mountain until Sinjar and its residents are free of the Jihadi militants.
