PKK: ‘Ready to defend Syrian Kurdish territory against ISIS’

ARA News – 4-10-2014 – Kobane, Syria – New military reinforcements arrived in the Kobane area in northern Syria to back militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) that continue the fight against the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) in an attempt to take over the city of Kobane. YPG-linked sources told ARA News that IS extremists received reinforcements from IS-held Raqqa province and the Jarabus area on Friday, as dozens of armored vehicles were seen arriving in the countryside of Kobane.

On the other hand, the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units YPG were able to destroy an IS-led tank on Friday morning, using a thermal rocket near the village of Mazraat Dawood east of the city of Kobane.

Meanwhile, the U.S.-led coalition’s warplanes destroyed several IS-led tanks near the village of Idi Qoy, according to the commander of Shams Ash-Shamal Brigades of the Free Syrian Army (FSA), in addition to the destruction of other military vehicles east of Mount Mishta Nour. On the other hand, the leadership of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) released a statement on Friday, announcing its readiness to join the fight in Syria and defend the city of Kobane against Islamic State’s militants. The PKK statement, of which  ARA News received a copy, called on the Kurdish people in the four parts of Kurdistan (Syria, Iraq, Iran and Turkey) to join what it called “the resistance” to protect Kobane against IS extremists.

“All Kurds should show solidarity with and responsibility for Kobane. We must defend our people’s right in freedom by defeating those extremists,” the PKK’s leadership said. ” We are willing to sacrifice for Kobane and Shingal. We will continue the struggle until we can guarantee the freedom of our Kurdish people.” On Friday, the Islamic State groups bombed the Kurdish city of Kobane with at least 50 mortar shells, killing and injuring dozens, according to local sources.  Reporting by: Jan Ali –
