A Kurdish militant leads ISIS operations against Kobane – Khattab al-Kurdistani

ARA News – 12-10-2014 –  Adana, Turkey – Media activists close to the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS), an al-Qaeda offshoot, revealed that the battles in the city of Kobane, northern Syria, are being led by one of the Kurdish leaders in the extremist group.

Khattab al-Kurdistani, a leading member of IS, is the commander in chief of the ongoing attacks by the group against the Kurdish city of Kobane, where hundreds of fighters of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) are stationed trying to defend the city against the IS offensive, sources told ARA News. Al-Kurdsitani, a Kurdish man from the town of Halabja in the province of Sulaymaniyah in northern Iraq, was born in 1986, and is currently in charge of military operations by the Islamic State in Kobane.

Al-Kurdistani has addressed his co-fighters in which he said that the purpose of the entry into Ain al-Islam (in reference to Ain al-Arab “Kobane”) is only to expel “insurgents of the PYD and its YPG militia led by Saleh Muslim”. “We have no other purposes but to repel PYD militias from the city (Kobane),” he said in a statement published online on Thursday.

A source close to the Islamic State in Syria stated to ARA News that al-Kurdistani participated in the battles of Tel Hamis, Tel Birak and Jazaa in Hasakah province, and had planned for many attacks against Kurdish villages in the countryside of Qamishlo (Qamishli) in northeastern Syria, and then moved to Iraq with the group’s control of the city Mosul and the area of Shingal (Sinjar) –where massacres against the Yezidi minority took place.

“Al-Kurdistani is now at the head of nearly 400 armed Kurdish militants from Iraq, Iran, Turkey as well as from some western countries, who are striving to capture the city of Kobane as a stronghold,” the source said. Noteworthy, al-Kurdistani had vowed in mid-August of launching reprisal operations against the YPG forces following clashes between them and the IS in the countryside
