Christians are leaving Iraq: official tells Kurdpress

16-9-2014 – Kurdpress – Iraq’s Assyrian Democratic Movement secretary general warned about the situation of the Christians in the state and stated the religious minority are leaving Iraq.

Yunadem Kona told our reported that the Christians are in a very tough situation and a thousands of them have took refuge in Kurdistan Region in north of Iraq and neighboring countries due to the insurgency of the Islamic State (IS) militants that attacked Iraq in June and took a large swathe of the state. He went on to say that the jihadist group has killed thousands and displaced hundreds of thousands of Christians and have threatened Iraqi Christians either to pay money, swear allegiance with the group or wait for death.

Kona noted Christians were defenseless and had no arms to protect themselves during that insurgency of the extremist group into Iraq and many Christians were either killed or fled from their homes, adding that many Christians have left Iraq and took refuge in European states.
