Syrian Government Demands YPG to Leave Aleppo – The YPG forces have been defending part of Aleppo against the Syrian rebels for over two years

BasNews – 24 Dec 2016 – ERBIL — The Syrian Kurdish People’s Defense Units (YPG) which is the major constituent of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) will have to abandon the areas it has been controlling in Aleppo for over two years, according to the Syrian State TV. The Kurdish forces who have been protecting Sheikh Maqsoud district in Aleppo have been asked by Damascus to hand over the control of the area to the Syrian Regime Security Forces by the end of this year, the Syrian State TV announced.

After the Syrian army, backed by Russian air power, seized control of eastern Aleppo, the government had decided to take control of the entire city. Thus, the Syrian government demanded YPG to vacate the districts that it has been keeping hold of and protecting from the Syrian opposition forces.

Moreover, a local source from Sheikh Maqsoud told BasNews that the Syrian regime attempted to deploy Iraqi Shi’ite militia in the neighbourhood which led to tension in the area as YPG opposed the militia forces’ involvement in the administration of the district. The source revealed that the government therefore requested YPG to leave the area by the end of 2016.According to Syrian sources, approximately 2,000 Iraqi militiamen have thus far arrived in Syria over the past weeks to reinforce the Syrian army. The Kurdish controlled neighbourhood of Sheik Maqsoud in Aleppo is the only area of the city which is not under the government’s control. It is a Kurdish populated area which was repeatedly targeted by the Syrian rebel shelling. www.mesop.de
