MESOP ELECTION REPORT : Pro-Kurdish party celebrates gains in Turkey’s south-east / Turkish PM Erdogan’s AK Party remains largely in power across the country.
BDP: No surprise. – World Bulletin / News Desk – 30.3.2014 – The polls have closed in the Turkish local elections and the first results have started coming in. So far, there have been no major surprises, with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling AK Party way ahead in the lead across the country. As expected, the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) took much of the mainly Kurdish south-east region of the country. Hakkari, Sirnak, Siirt, Bitlis, Batman and Diyarbakir all voted BDP.
Despite the great efforts put in by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to increase the ruling AK Party’s popularity in the region, he was unable to sway voters his way. In a rather surprising turnout, however, the province of Tunceli – which usually votes for the main opposition party CHP – also voted for the pro-Kurdish party BDP in the local elections. http://www.worldbulletin.net/headlines/132429/pro-kurdish-party-celebrates-gains-in-turkeys-south-east
