Distinguished members of the US Federal Bar Association!
For over 68 years, the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI) has been struggling to bring about a democratic Iran, wherein which the national-political rights of the Kurdish nation can be realized. In the course of this struggle, during both the former regime of the Shah’s monarchy and the current regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran, thousands of political activists have sacrificed their lives. Dr. Sadegh Sharafkandi, then the Secretary General of the PDKI and his comrades who were gunned down in Mykonos restaurant in Berlin, Germany’s capital on September 17, 1992, are among a few of those thousands of victims.
Following three years of tireless efforts by the prosecutors and judges in Berlin, the perpetrators of this heinous crime were brought to justice in the court of law. Furthermore, the judiciary in Germany did not bow to any intimidation or decadence from any one and pronounced the truth in a historic judgment that high up in the echelons of power in the Islamic Republic, the regime’s current Supreme Leader, then the President, and then the Intelligence chief had planned and directed the assassination.
The findings of the trial and its announcement, partly led to the cessation of the chain of terror by the regime of Islamic Republic against freedom-loving Iranian dissidents abroad. The PDKI and the Kurdish people in Iran were quite content, primarily because three years prior to the murder in Berlin, Dr. Sharafkandi’s predecessor, Dr. Abdul-Rahman Ghassemlou was assassinated by the same regime on July 13, 1989 on the negotiation table with the mercenaries and representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Austria’s capital, Vienna. Regrettably, the justice system in Austria not only failed to bring to justice the culprits in its custody, but it also escorted them back to Iran, where they were rewarded by the regime’s officials.
Now with your rightful decision, we are delighted that the prosecutors of the Berlin murder get awarded for independence and professionalism in their legal work. On this occasion, on behalf of the PDKI and the Kurdish nation in Iranian Kurdistan, I would like to congratulate the respected prosecutors. As well, the presenting of this award for their professional excellence is rightly deserved. I would also like to extend our sincere gratitude for such an initiative and congratulate the organizers of such a noble task of awarding the courageous prosecutors in the historic trial of what came to be known as the Mykonos case.
Sincerely yours, Mustafa Hijri – Secretary General – Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan – February 25, 2014
