Kurdish Politician Wants Ditches Around Iraqi and Syrian Kurdistan

19.10.2014 – BasNews, Erbil – A Syrian Kurdish politician has called for the immediate digging of trenches around all borders of the Iraqi and Syrian Kurdistan regions to protect it from the extremist groups.Nuri Brimo, spokesman for the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP-S) told BasNews both Kurdish regions need trenches around them to prevent extremists from sneaking into the regions and causing instability.

“We have to protect the Kurdish regions with whatever we can,” added Brimo.

Brimo also said that Kurdish authorities in the Iraqi Kurdistan region and Syrian Kurdistan should dig a ditch stretching from Afrin, a Kurdish Syrian city in north Syria to Khanaqen, a Kurdish city in southeast of Iraqi Kurdistan. He said that the distance is about 2000 km and it will prevent Islamic State militants slipping into Kurdish regions. Earlier this year the Iraqi Kurdistan Region dug a number of trenches on its borders with Syrian Kurdistan and near Kirkuk, however the plan came under attack from some Kurdish parties in Syria and Iraq. There was a demonstration earlier this year regarding the ditches and the protestors said that the digging of trenches would create more disunity amongst Syrian and Iraqi Kurds. A letter was also sent to parliament to argue against the project.
