YPG & pro-Assad forces: enemy of my enemy is my friend

ARA News – 28-7-2014 – Al-Hasakah, Syria – After two days of violence and air strikes by the pro-regime warplanes, the southern countryside of al-Hasakah city in northeastern Syria saw a relative calmness on Saturday, except for the village of al-Himir where clashes continued between the pro-Assad army and militants of the Islamic State (IS).The Islamic State withdrew on Thursday from the Power Plant and Juvenile Prison near Panorama barrier at the southern entrance of al-Hasakah to the IS-held villages of al-Karama and al-Khama’el.

Militants of IS group (previously known as ‘ISIL’) forcibly withdrew from the artillery regiment in al-Melebiya after bombardment by the pro-regime warplanes and artillery shelling by the Syrian military forces in Hasakah.

At least three members of IS were killed in the attacks, before the rest withdrew. While the commander of the pro-Assad forces and several other soldiers were reportedly killed before regaining control over al-Melebiya.On the other hand, Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection units (YPG) –which is in control over several Kurdish-populated neighbourhoods of Hasakah– advanced on Saturday towards al-Sinaa roundabout and installed a number of checkpoints alongside with al-Nasr checkpoint at the crossroads of previously YPG-held districts of Salehiya, Mufti and Azizia.

A source close to the YPG forces told ARA News that the Kurdish forces reached an agreement with the pro-regime forces in Hasakah, which entails partial coordination between both sides inside the city.

“This coordination is accomplished to enable both sides to protect Hasakah city against Islamic State militants and further regain the southern countryside. Such an agreement was necessary to avoid side conflicts and focus on anti-IS war,” the source (who conditioned not to publish his name) stated to ARA News on Saturday evening.

Meanwhile, a YPG fighter confirmed to ARA News on the phone that “350 YPG members arrived in Melebiya regiment to back anti-IS forces there”. Noteworthy, many of the city’s neighbourhoods suffer continuous power cut since the start of the clashes on Thursday.Reporting by: Zaradasht Khalil  source: ARA News
