MESOP COMPLETE REPORT WITH ALL STATISTICS & GRAPHICS – 2015 Turkey Election Report – The Rethink Institute | June 2015

NORTH KURDISTAN (TURKEY) – Cover 2015 Turkish Election Report . – On June 7, 2015, Turkey survived a tense, critical parliamentary election that dramatically decreased the ruling AKP’s parliamentary majority and elevated the HDP to the national scene. In this brief report, experts interpret the results and offer their projections for the near future of Turkish politics.

Fevzi Bilgin argues that the people of Turkey chastised the ruling AKP at the ballot box for, more than anything, its heavy-handed, polarizing politics and disregard for the rule of law, separation of powers, and basic rights and freedoms.

Ahmet T. Kuru calls the June 7 elections the most unfair since the 1983 elections controlled by the military junta. He also examines various coalition possibilities.

Mustafa Gurbuz points out the opening of a new chapter for Kurdish politics as a result of the HDP’s unprecedented success in the elections and discusses the challenges for the Kurdish region and the peace process.

Birol Baskan contends that while escaping from an authoritarian takeover by the AKP, Turkey has plunged directly into a period of great political uncertainty. He adds that it will take great statesmanship to pull Turkey out of this situation.2015
