Sistani pushes Maliki to step down – 26.07.2014 – BasNews, Baghdad – Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani has asked Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to give up his post and refrain from running for a third term, according to the cleric’s official website.
Sistani’s deputy Sheikh Abdul Mahdi Karbalayi reportedly passed on a message from the cleric, in which Sistani asked for the formation of a new government, requesting that officials do not retain their current posts and to do so in the next 15 days. Sistani also praised the Iraqi Parliamentary success in electing the new parliament leadership and the president, senior Kurdish lawmaker Fuad Masum. He stressed the need to continue taking steps towards governmental pluralism and address Iraq’s deep-seated problems, while maintaining national unity and preventing the partition of Iraq. Most of Iraqi political parties have revealed that they are against Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to run for his third term and remain Iraqi prime Minister.
