MESOP : Barzani calls for emergency meeting over KRG presidency

16 Aug 2015 – BasNews – Iraqi Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani has called all Kurdish political parties to hold an emergency meeting over the future of the region’s presidential position, which has been causing tensions recently, BasNews reported.

In a statement released on Sunday, Barzani has asked all parties to meet before the deadline of August 20th. It has become such an issue within the KRG in recent weeks that neighboring countries and the US have sent delegations to meet concerned parties.The four main Kurdish opposition parties – the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Gorran “Change” Movement, Kurdistan Islamic Group (Komal) and Kurdistan Islamic Union – have presented a draft law, which calls for an amendment to the KRG presidential law, with Barzani finishing his term August 20th. “I call on all parties who are in government or outside of it, to meet before Aug 20th, to avert this crisis and reach an agreement that is in the interests of our people”, said Barzani in the statement.The Barzani statement comes as tensions are rising among KRG parties.
