MESOP BACKGROUND : Peshmerga batting problems in fight against IS: report

29 June 2015 – Kurdpress – Leaning towards political parties and unequal distribution of arms are the troubles that the Kurdish forces of Peshmerga are battling with in war against the militants of the Islamic State (IS), a report said.

According to a report by the analytical website of The War Is Boring, there is not real unity among the Kurdish forces of Peshmerga and most of the Kurdish forces are not ready to put orders by the Peshmerga minister into action as his party was an opposition party last year, a situation that has created chaos in the ranks of the forces and commanders. The report also has quoted the Peshmerga commanders as blaming the anti-IS coalition for unfair distribution of arms among different ranks of the Kurdish forces, something that has lessened Peshmerga capability in fight against the radical forces. The website said only 30 percent of the Kurdish forces don’t have political party affiliations and put Peshmerga ministry commanders. Another problem is the unknown number of the Kurdish forces. The report said no one knows the number of Peshmerga forces. Estimations put the numbers between 80000 to 250000 forces, volunteer forces included.
