Syrian Kurds to Human Rights Watch: ‘Unfair to not consider our circumstances’

By FRÉDERIKE GEERDINK – 6.7.2014 – If the administration of Syrian Kurdistan, also known as Rojava, kept their promise to the international community, starting this weekend there are no more children in Rojava’s armed forces. The latest critics on the human rights situation in Rojava come from Human Rights Watch. Rojava recognizes the problems but keeps asking attention for the circumstances they live in.

Starting today, 5 July, there will be no more children under 18 serving in the police forces and armed forces of Syrian Kurdistan. At least that’s the promise the administration of Syrian Kurdistan, also known by its Kurdish name Rojava, made on 5 June to Geneva Call, an NGO urging ‘armed non-state actors’ to respect international humanitarian norms in armed conflict. The presence of minors in both forces has been a concern for some time now, recently expressed again in a report Human Rights Watch published about the human rights situation in Syrian Kurdistan. In that report, other human rights violations are also listed.

In an extensive reaction to the report, the Kurdistan administration says it shares the ideals of Human Rights Watch and it acknowledges the criticism pointed out by HRW, but adds: ‘It is necessary to bear in mind the extraordinary circumstances under which we live’. https://www.beaconreader.com/frederike-geerdink/syrian-kurds-to-human-rights-watch-unfair-to-not-consider-our-circumstances
