MESOP : A NATIONAL KURDISH ARMY ? Kurdistan Region to organize Peshmerga, form joint military force

30-8-2014 – Kurdpress – Kurdistan Region is planned to organize it Peshmerga forces and form a joint military forces that is not affiliated with any special party or group in the region.

The region’s President Massoud Barzani has ordered Peshmerga minister to organize the forces in six months and form a joint military force. The decision came after the Kurdish forces’ defeat form the militants of the Islamic State in northern cities of Shingal and Zomar and some other cities in the last month. The region’s two ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) have their own Peshmerga forces and studies of the defeats from the jihadist militants show the division of the Kurdish forces has been a reason of the defeats. According to reports there are also more than 19 separate forces that are fighting in the region against the Islamic State terrorists. According to the region’s decision all forces will be merged into a united military force and the number of officials’ body guards will decrease.
