Talabani sent letter to Imam Khomeini before Islamic Revolution: official
A member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) revealed the party’s leader Jalal Talabani sent a letter to Imam Khomeini, the leader of the Islamic Revolution of Iran ahead of the revolution in in 1978
The official, Wasifa Bani Wais, stated Talabani was well aware that the Islamic revolution of Iran will eventually topple the Shah regime and Iran and therefore wrote a letter to Imam Khomeini and announced his support to the revolution. Wais, a member of the PUK leading council, further went on to say that he himself took the letter to Imam Khomeini who was in exile in Najaf at the time. “I secretly took the letter to Imam Khomeini. It was a hot noon. There was a small shop near the house Imam Khomeini was under house arrest. The guards of the house were drinking Nushaba (a kind of non-alcoholic drink). I entered the house in Imam Khomeini’s surprise and gave him the letter,” the official further said, reiterating that Ayatollah Khomeini appreciated Talabani’s support but said he cannot return Iran through its border with the Kurdish regions of Iraq which was under the control of the Kurds at the time. Talabani had stated in the letter that he can help Imam Khomeini to return Iran trough Iraq eastern Kurdish regions.
