Kurdistan Region parliament passes referendum law

MESOP : THE DECISIVE MOMENT IN KURDISH HISTORY – FORWARD TO THE REFERENDUM – PKK SHOULD RESPECT WILL OF KURDISH MASSES

25-7-2014 – Kurdistan Region Parliament passed a law that demands establishing an election independent commission and holding a referendum that will ask people in the region whether they want to remain a part of Iraq or want to quit the country. The law was passed with 83 votes in the legislative body’s meeting yesterday.

The law was ratified after Parliament Election Committee held meetings and discussed Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani’s demand from the parliament to make a plan for the referendum in the region. Barzani told BBC that Iraq has been divided into three parts and the people of the Kurdish region have the right to decide whether they want to have their independent state. After the Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (ISIS) insurgency in Iraq and controlling some northern and northwestern region in the state, including Iraq’s second biggest city of Mosul, Kurdish forces of Peshmerga took full control of the disputed regions, the so-called regions that both Baghdad and Erbil governments claim authority over.
