Shoguna B. Sobir – 2 Nov 2016 – ISTANBUL – BasNews – The Chief of the Russian General Staff, First Deputy Defense Minister Valery Gerasimov met on Tuesday with the Chief of the Turkish General Staff General of the Army Hulusi Akar.
“The parties discussed issues of interaction in solving the Syrian conflict, including ones connected with stabilization of situation in the area around Aleppo,” according to the Russian General Staff statement. “They also had a frank exchange on the situation in the north of Syria and near the Syrian-Iraqi borders in course of the operation aimed at fighting ISIS near the Mosul city.”“The negotiating sides noted the necessity of dividing Jabhat al-Nusra formations from ‘moderate opposition’,” reported the Russian General Staff.
However, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), which referred to Yeni Safak and its high-level government sources, the meeting between the generals also included a discussion about the future of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Syria. “The essence of the deal will reportedly allow Turkey-backed forces to enter Aleppo and Assad forces will withdraw from the city. The prewar demographic structure would be taken as the base of this Project,” reported London-based human rights watchdog. “Turkey and Russia will not accept the PYD / PKK terror corridor in northern Syria that aimed to include al-Hasakah, Tal Abyad, Ayn al Arab, Jarabulus, Al Rai, Azez, Marea and Afrin under the name of ‘federation’, ‘canton’ or ‘autonomous region’,” continued the report.
