Basnews | Hoshmand Sadiq – 16.08.2015 – ERBIL – An Iranian delegation visited the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) politburo on Saturday 15th August in Erbil to discuss the political and security crises in the region. The Iranian Consul-General to Erbil Morteza Ebadi met with senior PUK official Saadi Ahmad Pira on Saturday in Erbil. The pair discussed the conflict with Islamic State (IS), and the disputes over the Kurdistan Region’s Presidency law.
According to the PUK’s official website, Ebadi emphasised the necessity of cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and Iran in tackling terrorism. The pair explored solutions to the ongoing debate regarding the position of KRG president. Incumbent President Barzani’s second term is scheduled to end on August 20th, with Kurdish parties unable to reach an agreement on whether the term should be extended.
