International community does not support Kurdistan Region’s independence: analyst
MESOP SHORT CUTS – SOUTH KURDISTAN
BasNews 27.5.2014 – An American political analyst believes the Iraqi northern region of Kurdistan has successfully controlled and developed the region in the past decade but that does not mean any international support to the Kurdish enclave to declare independence from Baghdad.
Gregory Gass from Brokins Institute said in an article in Washington Post that the international community and the US will not support the region to quit Iraq. “Kurdistan Region has successfully controlled that part of Iraq but no state has officially accepted the regional government and all deal with it as a part of Iraq. Although the Kurds are seeking independence, the region will remain a part of Iraq as the international community does not recognize the region,” he said, adding that despite 25 years support to Kurds in Iraq, the US has never urged the country’s Kurds to declare independence. Gass reiterated border changes are to come in some states including Syria but no such a change is expected for Iraq.
