A private school opened by volunteers from the faith-based Hizmet movement in Şırnak, a province in south-eastern Turkey, is preparing to be the first school to provide Turkish Kurds with an education in their mother tongue. The initiative follows a government-sponsored reform package which has paved the way for such schools, the Taraf daily reported on Tuesday. The director of Yağmur College, Mahmut Bulut, told Taraf that the school is ready to provide education in Kurdish if students? parents request it once the legalities are ironed out with the government.

The school is the only private school in Şırnak. Allowing mother tongue education was one of a set of reforms announced by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Monday. The reform will make it possible for students to be educated in their native tongue in private educational facilities. The schools will be able to deliver education in languages besides Turkish, the Prime Minister said. The measure paves the way for Kurds, who have long demanded that the Turkish government permit a full education in Kurdish, to establish private schools providing education in Kurdish.

Erdoğan stated, however, that certain lessons will still be provided in the Turkish language. The Hizmet movement, which includes followers of the Islamic scholar, Fethullah Gülen, is known for its cultural and educational activities in Turkey and around the world as well as for its efforts to promote intercultural and interfaith activities. http://www.kurdishglobe.net/article/ED04FC038E8356C91491E151A9CA9369/-First-school-to-provide-education-in-Kurdish.html
