Assad ‘Ready’ for Rebel Prisoner Swap
13 Febr 2017 – Syrian state television reported that the government of President Bashar al-Assad said it is “continuously ready” for prisoner swaps (Al Jazeera) with rebel groups. The announcement comes ahead of a meeting on the country’s cease-fire between Iran, Russia, and Turkey this week. Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group, said on Sunday the group strongly supports the cease-fire (Middle East Eye). Any journalist covering a controversial topic like alleged war crimes can expect a hostile response from the subject of the story, but it’s extremely rare in my experience for a specialist in the field to respond to a major journalistic investigation by challenging the reporter’s professional integrity.
The report I wrote for the Nation on Feb. 7, the first of two parts, details the pattern of mass expulsions and political suppression by the ruling People’s Protection Units or YPG that has led to the flight of an enormous number of Arabs and Kurds from the region.
Mr Tamimi’s statements that the “author’s bias for the Syrian opposition and Turkey has been evident for years” and that he “uncritically relays dubious testimony that a far-minded journalist would have subjected to appropriate scrutiny” reads like an attempt to discredit the entire content of my story. 12 February/Assyrian International News Agency – Russia has called for the inclusion of the Kurds in the expected Geneva talks later this month, after their exclusion in previous rounds of both Geneva and Astana talks. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that his country is trying to bring the Kurds and the Syrian regime to a common ground aimed at preserving the unity of the country.

In recent years, it has become customary in much analysis of the Middle East emerging from Israel to divide Middle Eastern countries into a series of alliances or “camps.”These camps are identified in a variety of ways. But the most usual depiction notes a tight, hierarchical bloc of states and movements dominated by the Islamic Republic of Iran. An alliance of “moderate” states opposed to Iran and including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, United Arab Emirates and Israel is seen as the principal adversary and barrier to the hegemonic ambitions of the Iran-led bloc.Some depictions also posit the existence of a smaller alliance of states and entities associated with Muslim Brotherhood-style Sunni political Islam (Qatar, Turkey, the Hamas enclave in Gaza). Gewalttäter warfen Geschosse auf die Polizei und zündeten Autos und Mülleimer an. Schaufenster wurden eingeschlagen. Ein Kind musste von Polizeikräften aus einem brennenden Auto gerettet werden.
