1 Jan 2017 Turkish president claims he has “evidence” of US support for Islamic State; Hassan Rouhani applauds valuable “victory” in Aleppo. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s frustration over his failed and costly Syria policies ventured into the bizarre when he claimed he had “confirmed evidence, with pictures, photos and videos” of the US providing support for the Islamic State (IS), the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) and the PYD’s armed wing, the People’s Protection Unit (YPG).
Semih Idiz provided the background for Erdogan’s outburst: “The United States initially provided air support to Turkish forces and the FSA [Free Syrian Army] as they moved against IS in the towns of Jarablus and Dabiq, which were captured with relatively few casualties. The US military announced in November, however, that it was not participating in Turkey’s operation in alBab. This announcement came after Turkish forces started bombing YPG positions around alBab. In August, the town of Manbij was captured from IS by the USbacked Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which is comprised mainly of YPG fighters. Erdogan’s determination to move on to Manbij appears to be another reason why the United States is reluctant to help Turkey in alBab. According to the perplexing scenario put forward by Erdogan, Turkey’s aim is to capture alBab before the YPG, rid Manbij of YPG fighters and work with the USled coalition to liberate Raqqa from IS, after convincing Washington to dump the YPG. Moscow Will Not Accept Long-Term Occupation of Syria – UN Syria Envoy Adviser
Moscow will not tolerate long-term occupation of any part of Syria, despite accepting Ankara’s military operation in the north of the country, Vitaly Naumkin, an adviser to the UN special envoy for Syria, said Monday.
MOSCOW, January 2 (Sputnik) — Since August 2016, Turkish forces have been conducting a military operation to clear northern Syria of Daesh, with the Syrian Kurds and Damascus accusing Ankara of violating Syria’s territorial integrity. “Of course, Moscow has made some concessions to Ankara by reacting very gently to the de facto establishment of a buffer zone in the north of Syria. There was no harsh reaction from Russia, but it does not mean that Moscow… will accept that some part of Syria is occupied by a foreign state for a long time, regardless of which state it is,” Naumkin told RIA Novosti. January 02 – 2017 More than 1,750 civilans were killed in the 10 weeks before the fall of oppositionheld areas of Syria’s largest city Aleppo to the Assad regime in midDecember, according to Syria human rights activists. The Damascus Center for Human Rights Studies, which documents casualties, recorded the victims between October 1 and December 14, just before removals of civilians and rebels began from east Aleppo. MESOP NEWS MULLAH LOSSES : Iranian IRGC general killed in Syria – Iranian media
2 Jan 2017 – A veteran general in the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) militia was killed during clashes with opposition fighters in Syria, according to Iranian media sources close to the IRGC.
The Iranian Fars news agency said General Gholam Ali Gholizadeh, a veteran of the Iraq-Iran war in the 1980s, was killed during battles with opposition fighters in Syria, without providing further details. The second part of Quds and Sinai were freed, and a townoutside the city in the north as well. There was contradictory news about the Hadbaa neighborhood in the north. Most reports said that the Iraqi forces hadn’t entered it yet, but one said that it had been liberated. Since November there have been several reports that the area had been reached, but all of those appeared to be exaggerations. Jadaydat al-Muftiand Qadisiyahwere also attacked. Read all |
