Kurdistan Region Will Become Independent in the Near Future: Peter Galbraith

“Kurdistan is much better prepared for independence than any other place that I have seen,” Peter Galbraith says

HIWA AHMED – BASNES  – 1 Dec 2016 – ERBIL — The US former diplomat Peter Galbraith believes that Kurdistan Region will certainly become an independent sovereign state in the very near future.

“I think that [Kurdistan Region] will certainly become an independent sovereign state in the very near future,” Galbraith said in an interview with Kurdistan 24, asserting that “the door to independence [for Kurdistan Region] is wide open… the question is whether the people and leaders of Kurdistan will walk through that door.”

Regarding the obstacles in front of the Kurdish independence, Galbraith said that there are always obstacles towards the independent Kurdistan, but “if you wait for the world to say you can be independent, that will never happen.” Galbraith argued that if the Kurdistan Region becomes independent, the US and other countries will recognize it. He referred to the other countries that previously became independent and were recognized by the US including Croatia, Slovenia, and Bosnia.

Galbraith said that “Kurdistan is much better prepared for independence than any other place that I have seen… Kurdistan is the best case and the best prepared.”Kurdistan Region “has its own government that functions well, has its own military, it has a source of revenue and the population almost unanimously supports independence… so it’s a door that needs to be walked through,” he said. “The best way to get it [independence] is through negotiations with Baghdad in which Baghdad seems to accept that Kurdistan Region will become independent,” Galbraith stated.Regarding the stance of the next US administration on Kurdistan Region independence, Galbraith said that it is not yet clear what the position of Trump administration would be on this. However he said that “he [Trump] has been very positive about the Kurds… the current administration and Trump recognize that Kurds have been the best US ally in the Middle East.” www.mesop.de
