MESOP : THE KURDISH STAR IS GOING DOWN – Situation in Kurdistan Region similar to civil war period: Gareth Stanfield
A university professor in Exeter University believes the situation in Kurdistan Region is as dire as the situation during Kurdish civil war during 1990s.
Crisis has stricken the autonomous region in the north of Iraq as the region has been the scene of demonstrations in the past days and a number of protesters have been killed in protests against corruption and the presidency of the region. Kurdistan Region’s President Massoud Barzani’s prolonged term ended in August 20. Opposition parties believe Barzani cannot run for another term but his KDP party reiterates that he can remain president for another term. http://www.mesop.de/?p=66311

MESOP : TODAYS Iraq Situation Report October 6 – 15, 2015 (BY ISW) – Click for MAP
by: Patrick Martin and ISW Iraq Team -Key Takeaway: Two parallel security operations by anti-ISIS forces are underway in Iraq, one in Ramadi that is led by the Iraqi Security Forces with U.S.-led coalition support, and one that is led by Iranian agents in Baiji. The ISF are approaching Ramadi city from multiple sides, but no ISF forces have yet penetrated the city center, which ISIS has likely prepared with IED rings and other static defenses. If the ISF are unable to clear ISIS from Ramadi, it will undermine the credibility of U.S. support to Iraq at a time when Russia and Iran are competing with the U.S. for leadership of anti-ISIS operations in Iraq and Syria. Meanwhile, PM Abadi announced a major operation to recapture Baiji from ISIS on October 7 that is likely being led by Iranian proxy militias, based on the presence of several senior militia leaders and IRGC Quds Force commander Qassim Suleimani in the Baiji area before the start of operations. MESOP SPECIAL : SYKES PICOT – THEN & NOW – FIKRA FORUM VIEWPOINTS FROM THE WASHINGTON INSTITUTE
THE VIABILITY OF A SECOND SYKES-PICOT – By Hassan Mneimneh – Fikra Forum – October 2, 2015
Given the reluctance of Western powers to intervene in today’s Middle East crises, hopes and fears regarding a new grand resolution may be overblown. For a few decades, the Arab political order provided both the region and the world with an illusion of sustainable stability. Now, after a succession of uprisings, crises, and wars afflicting the Middle East, the illusion of stability has vanished and the region has entered into an amorphous transitional phase.A conviction is asserting itself in Arab political culture that this transitional phase will lead to a “Sykes-Picot 2” — a definitive redefinition of the Middle East’s states and borders similar to the 1916 Sykes-Picot agreement. In Arab political mystique, “Sykes-Picot” is not merely an understanding between two waning world powers, it is the foundational event that redesigned the Middle East in the aftermath of the Great War and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. MESOP : GATHERING STORM – Iran and Russia Ready to Pound Aleppo
15 Oct 2015 – THE DAILY BEAST – Russian, Syrian, and Iranian forces are getting ready for an assault on a rebel stronghold. It’s a sign of an increasingly coordinated military campaign by America’s military foes.At least 1,000 troops from Iran and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah were massing north of the key Syrian city of Aleppo in preparation for an attack on the rebels there, a U.S. senior defense official told The Daily Beast. The coming offensive—what the U.S. military called a “major push”—would be the largest Iranian intervention in Syria since the war began and the strongest sign yet of an increasingly coordinated military campaign by three of the United States’ military foes—Syria, Russia, and Iran. MESOP BACKGROUNDER BY JOEL WING : Iraqi Fighters Taking Part In New Assad-Iranian-Hezbollah-Russian Offensives In Syria
16 Oct 2015 – Musings on Iraq – Allies of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad have been building up their forces for the last several months in anticipation of a new push to secure the northwestern section of the country. That includes Iranian Revolutionary Guards’ advisers and Basij militia, Lebanese Hezbollah, Russian air strikes and trainers, and Iraqi fighters. The Iraqis were some of the first to mobilize for these offensives, which just begun in October.
Starting in the summer of 2015 several Iraqi armed groups groups began recruiting for deployment to Syria. As Phillip Smyth wrote in a new report for the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, one of those groups was Kataib al-Imam Ali that was formed by ex-Mahdi Army militiamen. Nuclear Iran Weekly – Iran Test Fires Nuclear-Capable Ballistic Missile in Apparent Violation of U.N. Resolutions
Iran’s Defense Ministry announced the successful test of a new ballistic missile on October 13. The test is an apparent violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions and raises troubling questions about Iran’s strategic intentions even after it accepted an international agreement restricting its nuclear program in July. The missile, called the “Emad” (Pillar), is an upgraded version of Iran’s liquid-fueled Shahab-3 and could serve as a means of delivering nuclear weapons. The Emad, according to defense analysts, represents a significant advance in accuracy over the Shahab-3. A State Department spokesman called the test “deeply concerning” and said that the test “does appear to be a violation of U.N. Security Council resolution 1929,” which bans any activity related to “ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons.” The Emad’s reported specifications meet the Missile Technology Control Regime’s definition of a “nuclear capable” missile. The missile test, however, does not appear to violate the nuclear agreement itself or the new U.N. resolution 2231, which will supersede the existing Iran-related resolutions on the nuclear deal’s Implementation Day (expected early 2016). http://www.iranwatch.org/our-publications/nuclear-iran-weekly/iran-test-fires-nuclear-capable-ballistic-missile-apparent-violation-un-resolutions

IRAN’S MILITARY INTERVENTION IN SYRIA: LONG-TERM IMPLICATIONS
PolicyWatch 2505 – October 15, 2015 – By Michael Eisenstadt – Michael Eisenstadt is the Kahn Fellow and director of the Military and Security Studies Program at The Washington Institute.
Defending the Assad regime has given Tehran multiple options for expanding its influence and projecting power in the region and beyond. The Syrian civil war is transforming regional geopolitics, and one of its most dramatic effects is Iran’s seemingly expanding foothold in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Levant. While it is too early to know the ultimate implications of this development, several potential consequences have become clear. – AN EVOLVING INTERVENTION: http://www.mesop.de/?p=66327

THE GERMAN KURDISH CHAPTER
(MESOP)
