MESOP TODAYS COMMENTARY BY MUSTAFA AKYOL AKP SAY’S GOODBYE TO IT’S MODERATES
AKP to its moderates: Don’t let the door hit you on your way out
During Sept. 12-13, Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) held its annual convention at a gigantic hall in Ankara. It was the first convention at which the party’s “eternal leader,” Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was not physically present, because he is, technically speaking, a “nonpartisan president,” according to the Turkish Constitution. Yet in fact, the spirit of Erdogan was everywhere, putting its mark on the party more decidedly than ever. As a result, some key AKP veterans who dared at times to disagree with Erdogan and are viewed by some outside the party as “moderates” were excluded from the party’s decision-making central committee. Meanwhile, hawks and loyalists received promotions. Read all: http://www.mesop.de/?p=64824
MESOP : IRAN NUCLEAR AGREEMENT REVIEW
ISW President Dr. Kimberly Kagan Testifies Today to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee
Statement before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee – Kimberly Kagan – President, Institute for the Study of War – September 16, 2015
The United States faces national security challenges in 2015 of a scope and scale that we have not encountered since the end of the Cold War. The Islamic State in Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) has seized control of terrain in Iraq and Syria, declared itself a caliphate, and aims not only to reify that claim but also to provoke an apocalyptic war with the West. ISIS is challenging al-Qaeda, the terrorist organization from which it sprung, as the leader of the global jihadist movement. Russia, a nuclear power, is waging a crypto-war in Ukraine and is using its military capabilities to intimidate NATO. The United States and Iran have signed a nuclear deal that will relieve sanctions in ways that will likely increase Iran’s malign behavior in the Middle East, which already includes the use of proxy military forces to undermine U.S. allies. MESOP WASHINGTON: WE KNOW THAT WE DON’T KNOW ! – U.S. Weighs Changes to Syria Policy as Training Effort Struggles (CLICK FOR ALL LINKS)
The United States is considering an overhaul of its intervention policy in Syria. The U.S. effort to train and equip moderate rebels has produced only “four or five” troops still in combat in Syria, according to Gen. Lloyd Austin, head of the U.S. military’s Central Command, who spoke yesterday at a Senate hearing. Potential changes to the program could include lowering the number of trainees each year and embedding them with existing rebels as interlocutors for the U.S. military, as opposed to training whole independent units, defense officials told the Washington Post. MESOP ARGUMENTS & ANALYSIS : By Sudarsan Raghavan (WATCH STATISTIC)
One in five Syrians say Islamic State is a good thing, poll says / The Washington Post
A recent survey of 1,365 Syrians from all 14 governorates of the country found some surprising attitudes. Consider this: A fifth of those interviewed said the Islamic State — the brutal Islamist group known for its beheadings, that rules over large swaths of Syria and Iraq — is a positive influence on the country. And 82 percent said that they believe the Islamic State was created by the United States and its allies. The Syria survey was conducted by ORB International, a U.K.-based market research firm, from June 10 to July 2. The poll has a margin of error of +/-3 percentage points. Click for Graphic + pics : http://www.mesop.de/?p=64815

MESOP : PKK /PYD CONFISCATES HOUSES & SOIL OF PEOPLE WHO FLEE THE EUROPE
Abdulselam Mohammed, who works for the PYD administration in Hasakah province, denies that people are fleeing military service. He claimed that 90 percent of those who left the province departed three years ago for Iraq, before conscription began. Meanwhile, some Syrian Kurds critical of the PYD’s policies also criticise the KNC for calling on people not to leave. “It’s a farce. Most of the KNC members and their families and their children live in Europe, and outside of Syria. And now they are asking Syrian Kurds not to leave,” said Abdo, 28, who fled military conscription a year ago. “It’s a shame,” he said. www.mesop.de
MESOP : INHUMAN PYD / PKK REFUGEE POLICY
“They ban all the Kurds from Efrin to cross the border into Turkey. They just allow the Arabs to cross into Turkey through Efrin,” said Wasim Abdo, 28, a Kurd who left Efrin a year ago before the ban was imposed and now lives in Turkey.
The Democratic Union Party (PYD), which is affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Turkey, has established three local administrations in Efrin, Kobane, and Hasakah province, which are protected by YPG forces. But the administration’s struggle to provide jobs and services to the local population, and the mass migration, has led to disagreements between the PYD and the rival Kurdish National Council (KNC). www.mesop.de
MESOP : THE RELAUNCH OF A DICTATOR & MASS MURDER & WAR CRIMINAL BY WESTERN DEMOCRATS
US Congress rethinks anti-Assad stance
Julian Pecquet – Al Monitor – 17 Sept 2015 – A growing number of Democratic lawmakers are openly questioning whether toppling Syria’s Bashar al-Assad should still be a priority amid steady gains by the Islamic State. The issue came to a head Sept. 16 as a key Senate panel held its first IS hearing since the first batch of 54 US-trained rebels was routed in late July by al-Qaeda-linked Jabhat al-Nusra as soon as it entered Syria. Reports that Russia is beefing up Assad’s forces with tanks, troops and artillery has only added to the calls of some Democrats for a new strategy.”I don’t know that it helps for us to keep banging the table about Assad,” panel member Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., told Al-Monitor. “I think it would be better for us to be as effective as possible in fighting [IS] and restoring some kind of security environment that shifts back the flow of refugees.” – Read all: http://www.mesop.de/?p=64836
MESOP : FORECASTING THE SYRIAN CIVIL WAR
Sep 17, 2015 – Institute for the study of war (ISW) – The trajectory of the Syrian Civil War may fundamentally shift within the 90 day timeframe. Russia escalated its military assistance on behalf of the Syrian regime in early September 2015, deploying armored vehicles and hundreds of personnel to the Syrian Coast in preparation for the establishment of at least one forward air operations base. Rebel factions led by Syrian al-Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al- Nusra (JN) continue to pressure the regime’s stronghold along the Alawite Coast following a several-month campaign to expel regime forces from Idlib Province. Turkey and the U.S.-led anti-ISIS coalition intend to establish an “ISIS-free” zone in northern Syria along the Turkish border with the assistance of moderate rebel forces. MESOP: OBAMA HANDS IT ALL OVER TO PUTIN & THE IRANIAN MULLAHS
Seventy Years of U.S. Middle East Policy, Overturned – Obama cedes power to Putin.
3:50 PM, SEP 15, 2015 • BY LEE SMITH – The Weekly Standard – White House seems to think that Vladimir Putin’s Syria policy is a blunder of the first order. Recently, the Russians have deployed combat planes, tanks, ships, engineers, technicians, as well as special forces units to help sustain Bashar al-Assad’s regime. But that’s a bad idea, President Obama said last week. The project, he averred, was “doomed to fail.” Moscow, he contended, was “going to have to start getting a little smarter.”Presumably, White House officials are telling themselves that Syria will be Putin’s Vietnam, or his Afghanistan, or some manner of “quagmire” from which he will be unable to extricate himself. It’s useful to recall that the administration thought the same regarding Iran. Syria, in Obama’s words, was “bleeding [the Iranians] because they’re having to send in billions of dollars.” – Read all: http://www.mesop.de/?p=64848

Beliebiges.
Also nicht inter – sondern intrapersonal.
– Brief an Georges Izambard, 13. On devrait dire: On me pense.”)
