100 Kurdish intellectuals state their opposition to PYD ‘intimidation and treachery accusations’

MESOP: NO – to a stalinistic „one-party-dictatorship“ in West Kurdistan (Rojava) (Read below Arabic version)

By the 100 signatories*: (8th May 2014)

The Kurdish intellectuals, in particular the youth, were a part of the Syrian uprising from the beginning in mid-March 2011. All attempts used by the regime, including threats, intimidation, terror and misinformation initially failed to stop them. Unfortunately, however, the regime gradually succeeded in slowing down the Kurdish political involvement in the uprising by creating division and internal fighting amongst the Kurdish political organisations; and by using a variety of tactics to dismantle the Kurdish youth movement. These tactics that included the use of threats, spreading fear, arrests … forced many to become silent or leave the country altogether. However, the regime failed to subdue the Kurdish intelligentsia or to turn them into their supporters.

We the signatories of this statement strongly protest the deplorable situation the Kurdish political organisations in Syria find themselves in and hold them responsible for the political and social vacuum created by their disunity and lack of responsibility. Their weakness and lack of responsibility resulted in the organisation “The United Democratic Party” (PYD, the PKK branch in Syria) using various methods, including violence, intimidation and the use of scare tactics in order to mislead the people on one hand and terrify them on the other.

By this statement we also deplore the tactics used by PYD in order to harm the Kurdish process in the Iraqi part of Kurdistan and defame the Kurdish leadership in that part, in particular the president of Kurdistan Region Mr Masoud Barzani.

As writers, academics and intellectuals we oppose the use of hegemony and oppression in the Syrian part of Kurdistan.  We refuse to adhere to tactics such as the accusation of opponents as being traitors, regardless of the source. We will never accept the legitimisation of the use of terror, nor will we support the methods used in order to terrify our people or to mislead them in order to create division, fanaticism, and even fascistic tendencies amongst the Kurdish society.

We are calling upon our people, in particular the educated individuals, including those amongst the PYD, to be supportive of reform within the PYD and to put pressure on the leadership of the organisation to stop the hegemony, oppression and the behaviour that is creating antagonism and division within the Kurdish society.  The PYD needs to stop the methods used in its media, as well as the social media, that aim at defaming anyone not supportive of the PYD’s agenda, including the use of words such as “traitor.”

We believe in the use of reason, the importance of our people’s unity and respect for the principles of freedom and justice.  We implore every responsible individual and group not to remain silent in the face of those using the blood of our youth for their political agenda.

We do not want the policies of the Baath regime to be repeated in the Kurdish Syrian society. As we believe in the power of reason instead of indoctrination and accusation, we are against fundamentalism, whether religious or political, we are against the attempts by some fanatical Islamic groups to enter the Kurdish regions or to have an upper hand in all of Syria and because we always fought the terror of the Baathist regime by peaceful means, we must also stand against oppression, the mentality of accusation and hegemony, even if by a Kurdish side, whether in Syria itself or elsewhere.

Together for the use of reason, instead of party fanaticism and the use of the gun.
